Keyboard

A very common input device which has a set of
buttons. Text, numbers and symbols can be
entered

- General text entry
such as writing letters
etc
- Shortcuts/Commands
Numeric
Keypad /
Pin Pad

A small keyboard that only has numbers.
Used to enter numeric data into computers such
as those in ATMs.
cashier
Mouse

Often used to control the pointer in a GUI. A pointing device
found on most
PCs. Sensors on
the bottom of the
mouse detect
when the mouse
is moved. Data
about this
movement is sent
to the computer.
Touchpad

The user moves a finger across the touch pad
and this movement data is sent to the
computer.
A pointing device
found on most
laptops. Used
instead of a
mouse since it
takes up less
space.
Tracker

Graphics
Tablet

A stylus is held like a pen and moved over the
surface of the tablet. Data about the stylus
movements are sent to the computer.
A pointing device
often used by
designers and
artists to allow
natural hand
movements to be
input to graphics
applications.

Remote
Control

Joystick/
Joypad

The user moves the joystick left/right,
forward/back and data about these movements
are sent to the computer.
Used mainly for
playing games.
Light Pen

A light pen is a device used as a pointing device
or to write on the screen of a computer.
Light pens are
rarely used today
since graphics
tablets and high-
quality touch
screens provide
similar
functionality.
Touch
Screen

A touch screen is an alternative to a separate
pointing device. With a touch screen the user
selects items on the screen by touching the
surface. This makes touch screen systems very
intuitive and simple to use.
Often used for
information
terminals in
public places e.g.
libraries or
museums where
mice or
keyboards may
be stolen or
damaged

Device Image Description Uses
Magnetic
Strip
Reader

have a strip of material that can be magnetised
on the back. Data can be stored here in the form
of magnetised dots. Usually the data stored on
this strip in the same data shown on the front of
the card (e.g. the credit card number, expiry
date and customer name). The stripe allows this
data to be input to a computer system faster
and more accurately than by typing it in. A
magnetic strip/stripe reader is used to read the
data from the stripe. This is usually done by
swiping the card through a slot on the reader.
Credit cards
Chip
Reader

they have a tiny chip of computer memory
embedded inside them. (These cards are often
referred to as smart cards.)Data can be stored in
this memory and read back using a chip reader.
A card is inserted into the reader where metal
contacts connect to the metal pads on the front
face of the card. The reader can then access the
memory chip and the data stored on it.
Satellite TV
decoders use
smart cards to
store which
channels a user
has paid for. The
data is encrypted
so that it is not
easy to alter (you
cant add new
channels without
paying!)
Many types of
card use this
system: id cards,
phone cards,
credit cards, door
security cards,
etc.
Scanner

Scanning is taking a close-up photograph (slowly
with great detail). The scanned image data is
passed to the computer
device that
scans images,
book pages, etc
Digital
Camera

A device that captures digital photographs. photographer
Video
Camera

A device that captures moving images, or video.
It is like a digital camera, most video cameras do
not directly input data into a computer the
captured movies are stored on video-tape or
memory cards and later transferred to a
computer.
television
production and

Webcam

It Is a basic video camera used to feed live video
into a computer. Usually clipped to the top of
the monitor
The video data
from a web cam
is low quality
compared to a
full video camera-
but it is good
enough for web
chats (e.g. using a
messenger
application such
as MSN
Messenger or
Skype)
Micro-
phone

Converts sound into a signal that can be fed to a
computer.
Performances in
drama are using
microphone
MICR
Reader

Magnetic Ink Character Recognition is a
technology that allows details from bank
cheques to be read into a computer quickly and
accurately.
The cheque
number and bank
account number
are printed at the
bottom of each

OMR
Scanner

Optical Mark Reader, they detect the pencil
markings by reflecting light onto it. Less light is
where the pencil marking has been made. It
intercepts the pattern of marks and the results
through the computer storage, analysed and
reported
The national
lottery uses this
to input large
amount of data
quickly
OCR
Scanner

Optical Character Recognition is a scanner used
to scan text on a document/ piece of paper into
the computer. It then examines the page and
changes the letters into a form that can be
edited or processed by a normal word.
Used to recognise
postcodes on
letters at sorting
offices
Barcode
Scanner

The barcode scanner has a red light which a
series of vertical bars of a variety of widths.
Used in shops to show:
The country of
the manufacture
The name of the
manufacturer
A product code

The primary function of a magnetic strip reader is to read data stored on the magnetized strip of a card, such as credit card details, by swiping the card through a reader. It offers a faster and potentially more accurate method of data input than manual entry. However, in terms of data security, a chip reader offers enhanced protection. A chip reader accesses data from a memory chip embedded in the card, which can include encryption, making it more resistant to fraud compared to the static data on a magnetic strip. Chip readers are used in various applications, including credit cards, ID cards, and security systems, as they provide better data integrity and additional functionalities .

Video cameras and webcams differ primarily in functionality and use cases. Video cameras are designed to capture high-quality moving images potentially stored on video-tapes or memory cards for later professional editing, thus serving fields like television production and film making. Conversely, webcams are simpler devices typically used for live video input during web conferences or video calls, with lower resolution and fewer features compared to video cameras. Although webcams are more accessible and convenient for online interactions, they lack the quality and versatility needed for professional video capture .

Optical Mark Readers (OMR) process data by detecting and interpreting the marks made on specially formatted forms. As light is reflected onto the surface, the areas with markings absorb the light differently than blank areas, allowing the OMR to read and process the marked responses. A common business application that benefits from this technology is the processing of standardized tests and surveys, where OMR is used for quick and accurate data collection from large volumes of forms .

Both light pens and touch screens serve as pointing devices, allowing users to interact with computer displays directly. However, light pens have become less favored due to their cumbersome use; they require physical contact with the screen and can only work with CRT monitors, limiting their potential applications. In contrast, touch screens have gained popularity as they provide a more intuitive and flexible interface by allowing direct manipulation of objects on the screen without an additional tool, supporting a wide variety of gestures and multi-touch capabilities, which are more aligned with modern user interaction needs .

Numeric keypads provide advantages in business applications that involve extensive numerical data entry, such as in ATMs or point-of-sale systems. They are compact, requiring less space, which facilitates faster and more efficient number input without the clutter of additional keys found on standard keyboards, improving speed and reducing input errors in contexts where rapid, repetitive numeric data entry is necessary .

A business might opt for a touch screen interface in public terminal installations due to its intuitive and user-friendly nature, which simplifies user interaction, reducing the need for additional training or guidance. Touch screens also provide a durable and low-maintenance option since they have no moving parts, unlike keyboards and mice, which are prone to wear and tear, theft, or damage. Furthermore, touch screens can be designed to be more sanitary by reducing the number of surfaces users must touch, an important consideration in high-traffic public spaces .

A barcode scanner functions by emitting a red light that reads the unique patterns of vertical bars on a barcode. Each series of bars corresponds to specific information about the product, such as the manufacturer and product code. In retail environments, barcode scanners offer advantages such as speeding up the checkout process, reducing manual entry errors, and facilitating inventory management by providing accurate and immediate inputs into the store's computer systems about the products being sold .

Digital cameras have revolutionized image capture by allowing immediate review and editing of photos, eliminating the need for film development. They enable storage on digital media, facilitating easy transfer and sharing of images, and support a wide range of functionalities like resolution adjustment and various shooting modes not available on traditional film cameras. Moreover, digital cameras integrate seamlessly with computer systems, allowing for straightforward photo management and manipulation .

Graphics tablets enhance the user experience for designers by allowing natural hand movements to be input directly into graphics applications. Unlike traditional input devices like mice or touchpads, which can be less precise and intuitive for drawing, graphics tablets enable a more natural and precise control similar to using a pen or pencil on paper. This can greatly improve the ease of use and the quality of work for designers and artists who require precise control over their input to achieve detailed and high-quality digital art .

OCR (Optical Character Recognition) scanners benefit postal services by automating the scanning and processing of text, such as postcodes on letters. This technology improves efficiency and accuracy by reducing the need for manual data entry, thus speeding up mail sorting operations. However, potential limitations include difficulties in accurately recognizing poorly printed characters or handwritten text, which can lead to increased error rates or slower processing times if manual intervention is required to correct misreads .
