The Semiotics of Diagrams
Written assignment
Your written assignment is meant to be a write up of your in class presentation, comparing a
diagram (or example of new writing) of your choice (or several diagrams or examples of new
writing) to (a) comparable linear text(s), for instance a diagram of the hydrological cycle from a
school textbook with a written explanation of the hydrological cycle from the same textbook.
The basic ingredients are:
Contextualization of the example(s) and some consideration of why they raise interesting
and relevant questions
Comparative analysis of the example(s)
Discussion of the findings of the analysis
Conclusion(s).
But do not let this basic schema stop you from adding interesting sidelines and thoughts!
No specific word limit, but it should be possible to do this in 1500 to 2000 words. It would be good if
you could submit by the end of November. If for any reason this is a problem, please let me know.
