RS232 Module with MAX232 IC Overview

The document describes an RS232 serial module that uses a MAX232 IC to convert signals between RS-232 and TTL logic levels. It has a 5V operating voltage and outputs voltage levels of approximately ±7.5V from a single 5V supply. The module can be used to connect RS232 peripherals to computers that no longer have serial ports by connecting it to a USB to serial converter. An example application shows how to connect the module to an SB40A board to send data to a PC over a serial connection.

Product Description
Most todays computer does not have serial port.
Therefore we need to use an external converter (USB to serial
converter) to connect to older peripherals. RS232 module use
MAX232 IC. The MAX232 is an integrated circuit that converts
signals from an RS-232 serial port to signals suitable for use
in TTL compatible digital logic circuits. The MAX232 is a dual
driver/receiver and typically converts the RX, TX, CTS and
RTS signals.
Technical Specification
1. Voltage level outputs (approx. 7.5 V) from a single + 5
V supply via on-chip charge pumps and external capacitors.
2. 5V operating voltage
Application
Connecting RS232M module with SB40A board. In this example, RS232 will be used with SB40A
to send data to PC. The communication protocol can be done using the hyperterminal or ComDebug
Windmill communication. Picture of hardware setup is shown below:
