Electron Affinities in the Periodic Table

This document shows the electron affinities in kilojoules per mole (kJ/mol) of each element in the periodic table. Electron affinity refers to the energy released when an electron is added to a neutral gas-phase atom to form a negative ion. Most metals have positive electron affinities, while nonmetals tend to have larger negative electron affinities. Elements marked with an asterisk are not expected to readily form negative ions based on quantum mechanical grounds.
