Exploring Perspectives and Validity

This document outlines several techniques for developing critical thinking skills such as understanding validity, perspectives, issues, differences of opinion, and analyzing options. Some of the techniques described include identifying "hot spots" to understand validity, discussing possible viewpoints to understand perspectives, using "red light - yellow light" to focus on issues, using a value line to understand differences of opinion, and using tools like an options diamond or explosion to analyze and combine perspectives and options. The overall aim seems to be providing students structured approaches for comprehensively exploring topics from multiple viewpoints.

Hot spots ------ understanding VALIDITY

• Identify a situation: Is this true/false/ or between the two? What makes it uncertain?

True for who? ------ understanding PERSPECTIVES

1. Discuss: what was the situation the claim was made in?
who were the people who made it?
what was at stake (interests, goals)?
2. Brainstorm: list all possible viewpoints
3. dramatize: embody a person and say
“My viewpoint is…
I think this claim is true/false because…
What would convince me to change my mind…”

RED light - YELLOW light for truth ------ focusing on ISSUES

• Identify a source or a range of experiences to investigate
(e.g. rumors on the playground, a mystery story, home life, potentially risky behaviors etc)
• S look for RED lights= events YELLOW lights= potential for truth
Ask students to identify “zones” – whole areas that tend to be full red or full yellow. Write them on the
board in circles. Discuss.

Value line ------ understanding DIFFERENCES of opinion

• Present topic; S place post-its; discussion with arguments

Creative hunt -------understanding how creative things around us are

• Pick an everyday object (doorknob, telescope, scissors etc) or even something abstract (game, recess, the 24 –hour day)
• Place the target reading: Audience, Parts, Main purpose and say: “Let’s look at this from a creative viewpoint. Creative
things have jobs to do – they need to hit their target. Let’s explore how this object hits its target.”
• S fill out the diagram. Discuss.

Options diamond -------analyzing & combining PERSPECTIVES/OPTIONS

• Select a couple of obvious options: usually, there are trade-offs/tensions between them that
make the decision hard (if you choose X , you lose Y and vice versa)
• Make a diamond diagram and have S brainstorm solutions for each corner
(compromise – each side makes concessions; combine- both sides are combined and get the best of each)

Options explosion -------finding “hidden” options

• List obvious options
• Brainstorm all sorts of “hidden” options (that were not so visible at first)

STEP INSIDE: Perceive – Know – Care about -------exploring PERSPECTIVES

• S imagine being “inside” a character, object, abstract thing (e.g. the sword on a battlefield, the numerator in a fraction, a
character in a story etc)
