PETER RICE(1935-92)

Irish structural engineer Born in Dundlak, county louth Originally studied aeronautical engineering then switched to civil. In 1992 he was the second engineer to be awarded the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture by the Royal institute of British architects.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
Believed the best buildings result from the symbiotic relationship between the architect and the engineer where the engineer is the objective inventor and the architect the creative input Peter was a humanist As a young man, he found himself overwhelmed by places like the Louvre Museum in Paris or the National Gallery in London, having grown up in rural Ireland away from the urban centres of culture. . He aimed to construct buildings where ordinary people felt good, not alienated or intimidated by their environment.
