Music notation
A system used in sheet music (a music score) in order to represent the sounds that we hear or wish to produce through the use of written ancient or modern musical symbols. Music notation enables music to be read, mass produced and performed all over the world. This is because a standard system of music notation has been created and used all over the world. Analogy: the standard Music notation is to music is as the Roman alphabet to English.

Definitions
Note: a symbol used in musical notation to represent the relative duration and pitch of a sound. Note Value: The duration of a note.

Time Signature
What is a time signature?
A symbol used to specify how many beats are in each bar (the top number) and which note value constitutes one basic unit/beat (the number at the base).

In a time signature where 4 is in the base, the basic unit/beat in a bar is a crotchet. In a time signature where 8 is in the base, the basic unit in a bar is a quaver.

Tip: form a sentence (top number) (meaning of bottom number) in a bar

How to beam notes?


What is a beam?
A thick line frequently used to connect multiple consecutive quavers, semiquavers, etc.

This process of adding a thick line is called beaming. Beaming is done to group notes together according to the beats in a piece.
Thus it is dependent on the time signature.

Example of beamed notes


In a time signature where 4 is in the base, the basic unit/beat in a bar is a crotchet. Therefore, the notes are grouped equivalent to a crotchet value

In a time signature where 8 is in the base, the basic unit in a bar is a quaver. In this type of time signature, the notes are grouped equivalent to three quaver notes.
