Yutate
,urification rituals are e$tremely important in Shinto' Two components of Shinto ritual are purity and pollution' -or e$ample, a victim of an act of violence can become ritually unclean by bleeding' #t.s not the persons fault but it means the victim should become ritually clean again'
The first ritual is called yutate which involves a priest dipping the branch of a sa%a%i tree, which symbolizes the %ami )(/od(*, into a cauldron of hot water' The priest then waves the branch over the heads of the assembled people and say a prayer called norito' 0ater, the members drin% the purified water, becoming purified themselves'
The Great Purification The significant ritual symbolically recreates the act of purification that led to the birth of Susano1o Tsu%i1yomi, and !materasu' The ritual happens twice a year, at 2ew 3ear.s -estival and another at the
beginning of summer' 4uring the ritual, the priest recites the norito while waving a purification wand over the worshipers' The rhythm of the prayer is said to wash away the impurities within people and is the %ey to the event'
Symbol Torii
The Torii is the Shinto symbol representing the way to the &ami' #t is the entrance gate to any Shinto Shrine in apan' #t loo%s li%e the gateway with two vertical beams intersected by two horizontal crossbeams at the top' Torii means (bird dwelling( and the horizontal crossbeams leave the viewer with the impression of a bird stretching its wings across the s%y'
