PSV Reaction Force Calculation Guide

This document provides a formula and explanation for calculating the safety valve reaction force when gas or vapor is flowing through the valve. The formula uses the following variables: flow rate in pounds per hour, ratio of specific heats, molecular weight of the gas or vapor, absolute temperature at the inlet in degrees Fahrenheit plus 460, and the horizontal reactive forces at the centerline of the valve outlet in both pounds and kilograms. Two examples are provided applying the formula with given values for flow rate, temperature, and molecular weight.
