Improving Supply Chain Communication Strategies

If I were Chuck, I would have: 1) Contacted Vicente directly by phone to formally inquire about the issue instead of emailing others. 2) Apologized to Vicente to repair their working relationship and discuss potential solutions. 3) Ensured sufficient supply by talking to Vicente about addressing the problem and finding a temporary backup supplier, though it may cost more.

Qs. 3: If you were Chuck, what would you have done differently?

What steps would you take at this point to make sure the supply of the popular new toy is sufficient to meet the anticipated demand? With regards to the Vicente Issue: He should have contacted Vicente directly and made a more formal enquiry, attempting to speak to management in question. o A phone call is still considered more appropriate and in accordance with business etiquette. o Emails can be slightly impersonal and cannot portray the persons true emotions and view. Secondly, he should not have emailed his superiors and his friend Michael Cato because it shows disrespect towards Vicente. o It was not a very professional approach to the situation and he had definitely offended Vicente by ultimately talking behind is back. o Now there will potentially be a break down in their relationship and future production/sales may be compromised. Finally, I believe to resurrect some sort of working relationship he should call Vicente back after an hour, to apologise and talk about a way to work around the issue. o This would benefit both parties and by speaking about the issue they may be able to find a potential solution. o Although, there was a dispute this situation could have a silver lining if Chuck learns from this experience and uses it to learn more about his associates and even his sub-ordinates in the company. o Learning about the different cultures and ethical backgrounds would allow him to develop as a manager and possibly lead to a more efficient work force.

What steps would you take to ensure supply is sufficient? Talk to Vicente and ask if this problem could be addressed and what course of action is necessary. Find a parttime supplier who may be able to supply the good at short notice to match demand. o However, there may be a price to pay for this as part-time suppliers may only be willing to supply at a premium so higher prices compared to that of the regular supplier. o
