American Value System Even with a diverse culture there are still values shared by many Americans. o Individualism, progress, freedom, equality, etc Since values are dynamic, new ones have been added over time. o Especially the idea of self-fulfillment Social Control Society develops norms to reflect these values. Norms are enforced through internalization and sanctions o Internalization is the process by which a norm becomes part o of a persons personality from an early age. Sanctions are rewards or punishments that enforce conformity to norms. Negative and positive Sanctions can be formal: given by an institution like government, school, etc Informal: spontaneous expressions of approval or disapproval. Both are methods of social control

Social Change All cultures change over time for many different reasons Some of the reasons include: o Values and beliefs Segregation Jim Crowe Laws o Technology Cell phones/computers o Population Increase/decrease different people come to different areas. o Diffusion When youre around other people you learn stuff from them o Physical environment Global warming Tornados/hurricanes/blizzards o Wars and Conflict

9/11 Iraqi War Resistance to Change Change is always difficult for people to accept and they resist it in many ways Among these are o Ethnocentrism believe their way is better o Cultural lag some things in culture change quicker than other things School summer break, initially to work on farms Educational system model from 1900s, assembly line process o Vested interests People like things the way they are
