Diesel Generator Performance Analysis

The document outlines an experiment to plot the characteristics of a diesel generation set including: 1) Plant efficiency versus load 2) Specific fuel consumption versus load 3) Rate of energy input versus load It describes the diesel generator set apparatus, experimental setup, specifications, sample calculations and conclusions that plant efficiency increases with load initially and then reduces, specific fuel consumption decreases with increasing load, and rate of energy input has a linear relationship with load.

I) Aim: To perform trail on Diesel generation set and plot the following characteristics: 1) Plant efficiency v/s Load

2) Specific fuel consumption v/s Load 3) Rate of energy input v/s Load

II) Apparatus: 1) Diesel Generator Set i.e. Diesel engine coupled to A.C. generator 2) Stopwatch , Tachometer 3) Electrical Load Bank

III) Experimental Set Up: The setup consists of a single cylinder 4 stroke air cooled diesel engine which is coupled to AC generator. Fuel is supplies to the engine through a 3 way cock and fuel measurement system is attached. Time required for 50 cc consumption can be measured. The load on engine is varied with heater load bank.

IV) Specifications: 1) Engine: 1500 rpm, 3.7 kW / 5 bhp. 2) Alternator: 3.5 kVA , 5.5 Amps.

V) Observation and Result table:

Sr No

Load (kW)

Fuel Consumpt ion (cc)

Time for fuel consumption (secs)

Sp fuel consumption (kg/kWh)

Energy Plant Total fuel Input Efficiency consumed (kW) kg/hr

VI) Sample Calculations: 1) Fuel consumption: (kg/sec)

mf = m3/time x (800 kg/m3)

2) Energy Input : (kW) Energy input = mf

x CV

3) Total fuel consumption: (kg /hr) TFC = mf x 3600

4) Specific fuel consumption : (kg/kWhr) SFC = TFC /Load

5) Rate of energy input : ( kJ /hr) = TFC x CV

6) Efficiency: (Output / Input )

VII) Conclusions: 1) Plant efficiency increases with load and then reduces. 2) Specific fuel consumption decreases as load increases. 3) Rate of energy input v/s load shows a linear relationship.
