Advanced Operating Systems Assignment Guide

This document contains an assignment for an Advanced Operating Systems course covering several topics: 1) Combining kernel threads and user-level threads for performance and flexibility. 2) The differences between symmetric and asymmetric multiprocessing. 3) The contents stored in a process image. 4) The u-area and proc data structures. 5) Security levels available in UNIX systems. 6) Terms related to clock synchronization like clock drift, clock skew, and UTC. 7) The differences between internal centralized and distributed clock synchronization. 8) The differences between distributed file systems and single processor file systems. 9) Various file service models and their pros and cons. 10) The implications of relaxing the requirement that ptrace can only interact with child processes and why arbitrary

Assignment

1. How a kernel interface and a user-level thread package that together combine the functionality of kernel threads with the performance and flexibility of user-level threads. 2. Describe the differences between symmetric and asymmetric multiprocessing.

3. What are the contents stored in process image? 4. Explain u-are and proc data structure. 5. What are the security levels available in UNIX? 6. Explain following terms: (1) clock drift (2) clock skew (3) UTC 7. Differentiate internal centralized and distributed clock synchronization. 8. Differentiate distributed file system and single processor file system. 9. Explain various file service models with their pros and cons. 10. The pid argument of ptrace must specify the process ID of a child of the caller. What are the implications of relaxing this requirement? Why should processes not be able to use ptrace to interact with arbitrary processes?
