ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH, & SAFETY RADIATION PROTECTION SURVEYING LABORATORY RADIATION SAFETY
TASK
1. Entry into laboratory.
HAZARDS
Research activities involving chemical, biological, physical, radiological, laser, and other hazards.
CONTROLS
Observe ALL hazard warning signs on laboratory entrance. Be aware of the hazards in the laboratory. Dont touch or move items bearing hazard warning labels unless you are familiar with the proper procedures for handling that particular hazard. Ask laboratory staff about any unusual conditions or anything with which you are unfamiliar. Do not proceed with a survey in any circumstances where you are unsure about your safety.
2.
Swipe Survey.
Research materials: chemicals, biological, radiological, etc. Broken glass, sharps.
Wear PPE and observe hazard warning labels. Wear PPE, be observant of surroundings, and avoid broken glass and sharps. Use proper lifting techniques (bend at knees instead of waist and turn the whole body instead of twisting, etc).
Bending stooping, twisting.
Required Training: Familiarization with laboratory hazards and hazard warning labels.
Other Information: Contributors:
Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Lab coat, safety eye wear, disposable gloves, pants or full length skirt, closed toe shoes.
Entry into a laboratory after an accident, earthquake, fire, or other disruption should be deferred until a preliminary understanding of the conditions inside the laboratory can be ascertained. Environment, Health and Safety
