Wedgelet-Based Image Compression Techniques

This document discusses an image compression technique called wedgelets. It introduces wedgelets as a geometry-based technique that models edges in an image as lines. The document describes how wedgelets decompose an image into constant regions separated by straight lines, then compress the image by encoding the wedgelet parameters and compressing the residual texture. Finally, it presents results showing wedgelets can achieve high PSNR values while preserving edges and reducing blocking artifacts compared to other compression methods.

THE WEDGELET DICTIONARY

a)Parameterization of a wedgelet on an N*N image block orientation ,offset d & grayscale intensity values m1, m2 b)Example of a wedgelet for pixelized image block, N=16

a) Artificial Image b) Wedgelet decomposition. Each dyadic block in the tiling is constant or contains a single straight line.

COMPRESSION VIA EDGE CARTOON

Two stage cartoon/texture compression scheme.

ESTIMATION AND COMPRESSION OF THE EDGE CARTOON

Pruned wedgelet quadtree. Interior nodes I, Leaf nodes E (edge) and C (contant). The cartoon sketch is drawn according to leaf nodes.

Cartoon sketch C obtained from the coded wedgelet parameters. (Blocking artifacts at the wedgelet borders).

Final coded cartoon sketch C . Smoothing removes blocking artifacts while preserving coded edge.

Residual Texture Image

Wavelet compressed residual image coded cartoon sketch PSNR 28.48db

ZEROTREE COMPRESSION

IMPROVING THE COMPRESSION SCHEME

Wavelet compressed masked residual image + coded cartoon sketch. PSNR = 27.35db. Ringing artifacts are reduced significantly, but PSNR drops.

CONCLUSION
At higher compression ratios image quality degrades

Exploits simple geometric stucture of pixels near edges Used to improve visual quality
