Problem Formulation: Select interested area and find quality research paper and find current issue in that area. We might be proposed an architecture or solution to current problem in your area of domain. You can use one or more method to find new outcome of currently used methods. Extend the current scenario and design new algorithm or architecture or protocol. Find the question that need ask is this right. Test different result and compare and conclude from it. Build level by level to formulate a research problem. find the research problem is hard task. Distinguish relevant thing from literature review. Characteristics of Research Paper: 1. It should remain focused to the topic or argument 2. It must have an objective that includes contribution to worldwide knowledge 3. The sources and the material used should be qualitative and based on facts 4. It includes an acknowledgment for the opposing argument, but also shows how the argument is valid and important 5. Structured in a format that shows the research is presentable and logical 6. It should be time bound. 7. The work is original, not copied but properly cited. 8. well-organized- it is arranged in order
Moving from subject to area to topic to research problem:

Find the source of research ideas like, everyday life is one common source of research ideas, practical issues can be a source of research ideas, past research can be an excellent source of research ideas, and theory can be a source of research ideas. I read research paper based on classification and categorization and analyze the algorithm or method used for classification of documents. Xml based architecture for document classification and categorization. We can extend the xml based architecture through adding semantic information of all documents that needs to be classified by that architecture. Also add the learning algorithm to intelligent categorization and classification of documents. Then select a domain for that we need to classify documents. Domain are like email classification, research paper classification according to subjects or area, spam filtering, auto-reply of incoming mails etc.
