Wave Kinematics in Subsea Engineering

This document contains tutorial questions related to wave kinematics for an MSc Subsea Engineering course. 1) It distinguishes between deep, intermediate, and shallow water waves and calculates wave speed and wavelength at different water depths. 2) It derives the equations for horizontal and vertical water particle velocity and acceleration from the velocity potential function for deep water linear waves. 3) It calculates the magnitude and direction of water particle velocity and acceleration vectors at different points in the water column for waves of a given period and height traveling in a given depth.

MSc Subsea Engineering EG55F4 Risers, Mooring and Advanced Hydrodynamics Tutorial Questions Wave kinematics

Qu. 1 Distinguish between deep, intermediate and shallow water waves. A wave with period 10s is propagated shoreward from deep water to an inshore site. What is the wave speed and wavelength in depths of 100m, 30m and 1.5m. (Ans. 156m, 15.6m/s; 137m,13.7m/s, 38m, 3.8m/s) Qu. 2 Starting from the velocity potential function for deep water linear waves, derive the equations for the horizontal and vertical components of water particle velocity and acceleration. Qu. 3 Waves with period 8s and height 1m travel in a water depth of 15m. Calculate the magnitude and direction of the water particle velocity and acceleration vectors at a point 5m below SWL under the wave crest, the wave trough and the two zerocrossings. (Ans. velocity magnitudes 0.4m/s; 0.23m/s; accn magnitudes 0.18m/s2, 0.28m/s2) Qu. 4 Show that the maximum horizontal and vertical water particle displacements beneath a H cosh k ( y + d ) H sinh k ( y + d ) and respectively. Show that the linear wave are 2 sinh kd 2 sinh kd water particle orbits in deep water are circular and that water particle orbits in shallow water are elliptical. A 10s wave has height 3.13m in deep water and height 3m in a water depth of 12m. (a) Calculate the horizontal and vertical displacements of a water particle at y = 0 and at y = -d for the wave in the 12m depth. (Ans. horiz displacements: 2.35m, 1.81m; vert. dislacements: 1.5, 0.0m) Calculate the maximum water particle displacement at 7.5m below SWL when the wave is in infinitely deep water. (Ans 1.15m) Show that in deep water the particle displacements at y = -Lo/2 are small compared to the wave height. (Ans. displacement = 0.068m)
