Fun Kaleidoscope and Moth Ball Experiments

The document describes two science experiments for kids. The first experiment instructs how to make a homemade kaleidoscope using a paper towel tube, flashlight, glass tumbler, and mirror. When shone into the tumbler, the mirror will reflect light through the water and separate it into a rainbow pattern on the wall. The second experiment explains that dropping moth balls into a glass of water mixed with vinegar and baking soda will cause the moth balls to bounce up and down as carbon dioxide is released, giving the illusion that the moth balls are dancing to music.

Feast your eyes on the ever-changing, colorful patterns formed with every flick of your kaleidoscope...
THINGS YOU NEED

Paper towel tube (about 20 cms long)Flashlight A long transparent glass tumbler/ cup A small mirror (should be able to fit inside the glass tumbler)

PROCEDURE

1.

2. 3.

4.

This experiment should be conducted in a dark room which has white walls. Fill the glass cup with water Place the mirror inside the cup, tilting it slightly upwards. Next, flash the light onto the mirror.

Lo and behold, you have your very own rainbow appearing on the white wall opposite the flashlight!

REASON

The mirror reflects the light passing through the water. The water refracts or bends the light travelling at an angle. This separates it into colors of the rainbow red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.

EXPERIMENT NO 2: TUNE!!

MOTH BALLS DANCE TO YOUR

Get ready to rock n roll with moth balls

THINGS YOU NEED

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

MOTH BALLS A GLASS VINEGAR BAKING SODA WATER

PROCEDURE

Take a glass half-filled with water. Add a teaspoon of baking soda to it along with 60 ml of vinegar and stir the mixture. Drop about 6 to 7 moth balls in the glass and watch them rock to your tune!! The moth balls begin to bounce up and down in the glass.
REASON

The vinegar and the baking soda combine to give out carbon-dioxide. This gas collects on the moth balls raising them to the surface and then the gas escapes in the air pushing the moth balls down. The carbon-dioxide again collects on the surface of the moth balls and pushes them up again, causing them to bounce in the water as if they are dancing!!
