MongoDB Community Edition

MongoDB Enterprise Advanced provides several capabilities not available in the MongoDB Community Edition. These include an in-memory storage engine, auditing, and Kerberos authentication (all on self-managed deployments).

Core server capabilities are broadly equivalent across the two editions. However, a MongoDB Enterprise Advanced subscription includes additional operational and management tools, a commercial license, and access to 24/7/365 technical support.

MongoDB Atlas includes a fully managed cloud database and associated data services. This means infrastructure management—including provisioning compute, storage, and networking—is handled automatically, along with backups, patches, upgrades, scaling, and failover. These tasks are fully automated and handled without user overhead.

MongoDB Enterprise Advanced is a comprehensive suite of products and services designed to develop and support mission-critical applications in self-managed environments. Ops Manager enables automation of operations, including deploying, monitoring, backups, scaling, and upgrades.

MongoDB Enterprise Advanced and Community Edition offer similar core server capabilities for local or cloud development. Enterprise Advanced, however, includes additional operational and management tools, a commercial license, and 24/7/365 technical support.

Note: MongoDB features such as auto-scaling, stream processing, tiered storage for backups, federated queries, and data visualization are only available with MongoDB Atlas.

Yes. MongoDB Community Edition is the source-available and free-to-use edition of MongoDB. It is available under the Server Side Public License. 

MongoDB Community Edition can run on local machines and can operate entirely offline, making it well-suited for building, developing, and testing applications in a self-managed environment.

The MongoDB Atlas CLI offers a command-line interface designed specifically for local development. This tool enables developers to create and manage local Atlas clusters and interact with the database directly from the terminal using short, intuitive commands. This simplifies complex database management tasks, allowing them to be accomplished in seconds.

In addition to basic operations, the Atlas CLI also supports managing Atlas Search and Vector Search, enabling developers to programmatically configure and deploy powerful search capabilities.

Yes. Starting with MongoDB Community Edition version 8.2, developers can use full-text search and vector search capabilities directly in the database. This includes support for the aggregation stages: $search, $searchMeta, and $vectorSearch.

Community Edition now also offers features such as autocomplete, fuzzy matching, faceting, semantic retrieval, hybrid search, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). This is all possible without an external search engine or vector database. These features are available for free in MongoDB Community Edition.

The public preview of search and vector search in Community Edition is available on Linux distributions that support MongoDB Community version 8.2 or higher. These capabilities also function in Docker containers and with the MongoDB Kubernetes Operator. Support is planned for version 1.5 and above.

Note: macOS and Windows are not supported.
