    I wasted 2 years of my PhD waiting to publish. Here's how to publish in 6 months or less. Waiting for lab access. Waiting for ethics approval. Waiting for data collection to finish. Meanwhile, my peers published paper after paper. I had nothing. My supervisor kept saying: "You need original data to publish." I believed him. I was wrong. By year 3, I'd figured something out: The researchers publishing most weren't collecting the most data. They were mapping the field through scoping reviews. Publishing while they waited. So I tried it. Picked my exact research topic. Instead of collecting data, I mapped what was already published. 4 months later: My first scoping review accepted. No original data. Just a comprehensive map of existing literature.     Recently, I encountered a colleague's account describing how their manuscript required 22 months to progress through the publication process. The responses to this account were unsurprising: “Journals are too slow.” “Peer review is broken.” “This system needs to change.” However, an often-overlooked reality must be acknowledged: The responsibility does not rest solely with journals. The broader academic system contributes to these delays, and at times, individual researchers do as well. It is important to address these issues candidly. A single manuscript may require several months for publication, not due to editorial negligence, but for the following reasons: • Reviewers are overloaded (and unpaid) • Editors are handling hundreds of submissions • Many manuscripts aren’t review-ready • Leading journals are intentionally risk-averse in their selection processes In disciplines with high submission volumes, such as public health and artificial intelligence, the publication system is frequently overwhelmed. However, a frequently unaddressed aspect is the following: 👉🏾A weak manuscript submission is not only likely to be rejected 👉🏾 It slows the entire system down Given these challenges, which aspects remain within an author's control? The following strategies may expedite the publication process: 📌Prioritize journal suitability over impact factor. 📌Avoid submitting manuscripts based on emotional responses; instead, adopt a strategic approach. 📌The abstract is a critical component of the submission. If the abstract lacks clarity, delays in the review process are likely. 📌Minimize obstacles for reviewers. Clear communication accelerates the process, while ambiguity can result in significant delays. 📌Recommend qualified and credible reviewers if requested. This practice may substantially reduce the overall publication timeline. 📌Consider disseminating work through preprint platforms. This approach increases visibility while the formal publication process proceeds. What if the journal rejects? 📌Approach revisions with professionalism and attention to detail. Providing structured and prompt responses can positively influence publication outcomes.     🤔Thinking of publishing your research? 💡Here’s a quick guide to help ensure your work stands out and maintains the highest standards 📝 Key steps for successful research publication: 1.     Originality & Significance: Aim for work that brings new, meaningful insights to your field. Make sure your research contributes something original beyond what’s already published and that someone cares about it. 2.     Advisor Review & Literature Survey: Get input throughout your research from experienced mentors. Conduct a comprehensive literature review to understand past work and ensure you’re moving the field forward (using tools like Google Scholar, Scopus, Mendeley, or Zotero). 3.     Integrity of Data & Results: Present data (measured or simulated) accurately and transparently. All results should be clearly labeled, and any data processing or normalization must be explicitly described—don’t use shortcuts or obscure methods. 4.     Cross-Checking & Verification: Use multiple methods to verify results and consider peer review within your team before submission. Compare experimental, simulated, and theoretical outcomes to identify discrepancies. 5.     Responsible Use of AI: AI can help with language editing, code debugging, and literature search—but always double-check outputs.     Reviewers agreed my research was rigorous. Then they rejected the paper anyway. The science wasn't the problem. It usually isn't to be honest. But the structure was. Here's what I learned after publishing 300+ papers: Many rejected papers fail for this single reason: Reviewers never make it mentally past paragraph 3. They found nothing that grabbed them. Sorry, but they couldn't find your story or weren't interested in it. I've watched this happen nonstop as an Associate Chair. Solid methodology. Meaningful results. Genuine contribution. But still not passing the bar. None of the data you collected matters if you can't hold your readers attention past the first few sentences. Think of your paper as a pile of LEGO bricks. Raw data? That's the chaotic heap on the floor. Every kid dumps the box out. Every researcher collects findings. Yet nobody ever got famous by just playing around with LEGOs. (Sadly.) But here's where papers really perish for good: Most academics stop at SORTED. Great, you got your themes colour-coded, buddy, but you still gotta build the house. The papers that get cited for decades? They build the house. Brick by brick. Thinking. SORTED → ARRANGED → PRESENTED → EXPLAINED (W/ STORY) That's the journey your reader needs. From chaos to meaning. I now structure every paper as a 5-act story: Act 1: Introduction Create a curiosity gap. Make reviewers think: "Hey, I've never thought about that." Act 2: Literature Review Set the scene. Show how everyone's been circling a problem like sharks that your work now fills. Act 3: Methods Build trust. Write like Betty Crocker. Put down a recipe another researcher can follow. Act 4: Results Deliver surprise. Lead with your most counterintuitive finding. Yes, you can report results in a meaningful sequence. Act 5: Discussion Provide meaning. Connect your data to the bigger picture. Explain the: "So what?" One test I use for every section: → Why would a smart reader keep going? If you can't answer that, rewrite the transition. I spent years treating structure as an afterthought. The science came first. The writing came last. That's backwards. Rigour and readability aren't opposites. The papers that get read for a decade usually have both. Playing with LEGO bricks is fun and all, but have you ever built a house?     On Choosing the Right Journal for Your Paper (Not Just the Most Famous One) I spent my afternoon discussing journal submissions with PhD students from IS, OM, Sustainability, and beyond. As I reflected on our conversation, I distilled seven useful themes that help inform how papers are submitted to journals. What are they? 1. Start with Your Audience Ask: Who needs to read this paper? Is your work for disciplinary experts or interdisciplinary scholars? Aim for journals where your framing feels native. 2. Skim the Last 3–5 Issues Don't rely solely on the Aims & Scope. Study what the journal actually publishes. If your theory, method, or topic doesn’t show up, it may not be a fit. 3. Map Your Paper Across Three Dimensions Theory: Are you using frameworks the journal regularly engages with? Method: Do they publish your type of design (qualitative, quantitative, experimental, etc.)? Contribution: Is your core insight aligned with what they value? 4. Fit Journal Function to Paper Type Some journals want theoretical innovation Others prioritize applied insights or methodological novelty. Know what kind of paper you’ve written—and who publishes that kind of work. 5. Read the Author Guidelines Length, tone, formatting, citations—it all matters. Many early rejections happen because of mismatched expectations. Tailor your paper to the guidelines. 6. Ask Around Share your abstract with a peer or advisor. Ask: “Where would you send this?” You might get a better (or worse) answer than you expected. 7. Pick Where You Can Win High-prestige journals with weak fit are more likely to reject your paper. A slightly less famous journal with strong fit may offer faster review, better feedback, and more readers. Early publications can sustain your career, so get a quick win in a credible outlet if you can. We all agreed that it's not simple. BUT. You will never know if your paper is worthy of publication, if you don't submit. So. Choose the journal that’s right for your paper— then submit. And hope.
