    10 years ago, parking was a nightmare in Mumbai. 10 years later, it still is. And if we do not innovate, a decade from now, we will be having the same conversation- just with more cars and less space. With Mumbai leading the country in vehicle density at 600+ vehicles per km, parking is more than an inconvenience. It is an everyday battle. Residents, commuters, and businesses all struggle with a problem that has only grown worse. For developers, parking is no longer an afterthought. A well-planned parking space is now a bigger priority for homebuyers than premium amenities. It signals that the developer understands real urban challenges. So, how do we fix this?     🚛 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲: A Challenge...and an Opportunity 💡 America’s commercial truck drivers face a frustrating reality, there simply aren’t enough parking spaces. According to a recent FleetOwner article, there’s only 𝟭 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝟭𝟭 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 on the road. There are over 2.5 million commercial trucks that require parking on a daily basis. However, the US only has 697,000 official parking spaces - 𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝟭.𝟳 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝟳𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱! 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆?  My answer is yes and here's how: ✅ 𝗚𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 Dynamic reservation systems let drivers plan ahead and avoid wasting time searching or risking HOS violations ✅ 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝗲𝘁𝘀 & 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀 Assist these groups with sourcing parking and incorporate digital assets into their operation and offer bulk credits, subscriptions, and dynamic discounts ✅ 𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆  Turn underused lots, yards, and industrial spaces into bookable inventory — no massive new builds required ✅ 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗽 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 Integrate parking reservations into routing and dispatch tools so fleets can optimize schedules and compliance. ✅ 𝗗𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Open underutilized commuter garages, event lots, and other industrial sites for overnight truck parking ✅ 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 & 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆  Use gates, LPR, and cameras to make more private lots safe and easy to monetize ✅ 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗔𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 Integrate sensors and data to help drivers find open spots instantly along key corridors ✅ 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗸𝘀 Build EV/megawatt charging hubs into truck parking networks early This shortage isn’t just a challenge — it’s a chance for our industry to rethink how we use space and technology to support drivers.     This week's sketch note is about designing a smart vehicle parking platform. Imagine you are driving on a busy street, looking for a parking spot. With a few taps on your car's infotainment system, you will find a car park nearby, optionally reserving a parking lot before arrival. Yes, such technology exists today in latest vehicle makes, such as Mercedez, BMW, Kia, etc. How would we design a solution like that? To achieve that, car parks should be equipped with a specialized hardware/software module that detects the occupancy status of a given parking lot in real-time, whether occupied or vacant. Once detected, the Event Adapter software component translates that into an Event and publishes it into a topic in a streaming data platform, such as Apache Kafka, Redpanda, Pulsar, etc. The streaming data platform acts as a durable pub-sub broker here, ingesting events from car park modules in real time and making them accessible for downstream processing. Incoming events can be parking lot occupancy changes, lot reservations, and payments made upon exiting. Operational Microservices applications consume these events in real time and update a primary cache, such as Redis, reflecting the current status of the car park occupancy. Parallel to that, events are fed to a data warehouse for running analytics and powering various reporting dashboards. When a driver searches for available parking spaces, those queries first hit the manufacturer's OEM platform and are routed to the nearest parking management platform. Queries from the OEM solution enter the parking management system through an API gateway, which provides security, rate limiting, and protocol translation. The search request finally reaches the Microservices layer, causing them to respond by querying the cache. The response typically contains the number of free lots available. This is a very high-level design that I came up with. But you can use this as a baseline to build more detailed architecture. #dataanalytics #streamingdata #smartparking #systemdesign

When delivery vehicles lack adequate stopping spaces, they encroach into traffic lanes, create double-parked rows, and make urban mobility a daily struggle. Here’s a powerful insight: 𝒂 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍-𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒈𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍-𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒅 𝒍𝒐𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒖𝒏𝒍𝒐𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒃𝒂𝒚 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒇𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒖𝒓𝒃𝒂𝒏 𝒐𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝒏𝒖𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒔 𝒄𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒍𝒚 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔. The case of Querétaro, Mexico, exemplifies this. When designated unloading zones were cleared and respected, delivery drivers no longer scoured for makeshift parking; they reduced turnaround times and managed more deliveries with the same fleet. It wasn’t magic; it was urban management driven by logistical principles. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: Urban logistics cannot be addressed merely by optimizing routes. It demands effective governance of the "last mile." This requires four key decisions: 1. Design regulations (public sector) and logistics operational processes (private sector) with clarity. 2. Design and strategically locate functional loading bays (public-private collaboration). 3. Train traffic police and inspectors in the principles of urban distribution logistics, or better, "freight fluidity" (public sector). 4. Use data to monitor compliance and refine policies (both public and private sectors). Cities that embrace this vision will elevate their commerce, alleviate traffic friction, and enhance livability, all without massive capital investments. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗲 𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀; 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼. This is a strategic approach to revitalizing historic centers.
