    Datacenters are the foundation of our digital lives. They also create opportunities to demonstrate what’s possible when sustainability is treated as a design principle, not an afterthought. Teams around the world at Microsoft are tackling the energy and resource challenges of cloud computing head-on. In Europe alone, we’re implementing a variety of solutions: 🌱 Boosting biodiversity: Datacenters in the Netherlands are being designed with biomimicry principles, planting 150 native trees and 2,300 square meters of vegetation to restore habitats, improve water management, and reduce environmental impact. 💧 Saving water: We’re building datacenters in Spain with closed-loop cooling systems that fill once during construction and then continuously recirculate water between servers and chillers, eliminating the need for additional water and dramatically reducing consumption. 🔁 Cutting carbon: A new datacenter in Wales is being built using materials from a shuttered radiator factory, avoiding hundreds of tons of CO₂ emissions through smart reuse. ⚡ Stabilizing the grid: Across the Nordics, battery-backed systems help maintain steady grid frequency, making renewable energy easier to integrate and supporting a more resilient power supply. 🔥 Heating homes and businesses: Recovered heat from datacenters in Finland will help warm up to 250,000 homes and businesses through a municipal heating system. Denmark is setting up a similar system to extend the benefits of sustainable heating to more communities.     Efficiency isn't sustainable if it incentivises trade-offs that harm the planet. The 🇪🇺 proposed data center sustainability rating scheme overlooks a massive energy-saving gap. We risk penalising tech that could save 10,000 households’ worth of energy. Getting the "𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫-𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐍𝐞𝐱𝐮𝐬" right is essential for Europe’s twin transition. As we scale digital infrastructure at Google, our focus remains on energy efficiency and "climate-conscious" cooling. However, the current EU Sustainability Rating Scheme proposal contains a significant oversight regarding water usage. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐈𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞: The scheme risks penalising highly energy-efficient evaporative cooling, even in regions where water is abundant and sustainably sourced. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬: 🧊 𝑬𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒈𝒚 𝑰𝒏𝒆𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒚: Evaporative cooling can save the annual energy equivalent of ~10,000 households compared to dry-coolers for an average data center. ⚡ 𝑮𝒓𝒊𝒅 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆: Forcing a shift to waterless, energy-intensive cooling adds unnecessary strain to Europe's electrical grids and increases carbon emissions. We are calling for a more holistic, two-pronged approach: 1️⃣ 𝑨 𝑾𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒅-𝑨𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝑺𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒆: Metrics should recognise local ecological realities. We must disincentivise water-based cooling in water-stressed regions while allowing it where it significantly reduces a facility's energy use and carbon footprint. 2️⃣ 𝑮𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒓 𝑫𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒃𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏:To truly reach net-zero, renewable energy consumption should be matched in real-time, every hour of the day, on the same grid as the data center By refining these metrics, the EU can ensure the rating scheme rewards truly resource-efficient infrastructure and keeps digital leadership in lockstep with climate objectives.     Amsterdam’s green vault. DNB HQ used to store all the Dutch gold. Today, you can still visit the old vault rooms—and walk through one of the most sustainable buildings in the Netherlands. How do we know? It scored 92.47% — BREEAM Outstanding (top <1% of buildings). Scheme: BREEAM-NL New Construction & Renovation. Certification date: 2 June 2025. What BREEAM checks Energy, water, waste, pollution, transport, materials, management, health, ecology. Category results 100% in Management, Pollution, Waste. Lowest: Land Use & Ecology (still strong, room to grow). What they actually did (my top picks) 1. 80% energy-use reduction: solar + geothermal, advanced double-glazed façade, external sun-shading, heat-recovery. Demand down first, then supply clean. 2. Circular renovation of the round tower: dismantled modularly, materials reused/repurposed, city poplar wood upcycled into new slatted ceilings. Why it matters Lower carbon. Less waste.     My Take on Green Mark for Data Centres (GMDC) 2024: Advancing Sustainability The Green Mark for Data Centres (GMDC) 2024 framework, introduced by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and the Infocomm and Media Development Authority (IMDA) represents a major step in pushing data centres towards sustainable operations. As AI and cloud computing workloads increase, it’s vital that data centres meet rising demands while minimizing their environmental footprint. The updated framework tackles this challenge head-on, focusing on energy and water efficiency, carbon reduction, and advanced cooling solutions. 1. Stricter Power Usage Effectivenss (PUE) The new PUE thresholds—1.46 for GoldPLUS and 1.39 for Platinum certification at 25% IT load—are designed to drive energy optimization, even at partial loads where inefficiencies are common. These stricter standards align with the increasing power needs of AI workloads and ensure that cooling systems and energy usage remain efficient. 2. Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) For the first time, Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) has been introduced, with a focus on reducing water consumption in cooling operations. Data centres must achieve a WUE of 2.2 m³/MWh for partial credit and 2.0 m³/MWh for full credit. In water-scarce regions like Singapore, this shift is critical, pushing operators to optimize cooling systems and implement water recycling strategies. 3. Advanced Cooling Solutions The GMDC 2024 promotes innovative cooling solutions like immersion cooling and direct-to-chip cooling, essential for managing high heat densities in modern data centres. These technologies can significantly reduce both energy and water consumption, though their adoption may require significant upfront investment and expertise. 4. Carbon and Resilience The framework also emphasizes carbon footprint reduction, promoting the use of low-carbon materials and the tracking of greenhouse gas emissions. Resilience is supported through the use of efficient refrigerants and sustainable water management in cooling towers, ensuring long-term operational sustainability. 5. Intelligent Operations and Wellbeing Data centres are encouraged to adopt real-time monitoring systems to track energy and water usage continuously, ensuring efficiency. The framework also addresses employee wellbeing through improvements in air quality and biophilic design, highlighting the human element in sustainable data centre operations.
