    Not all innovation needs steel, concrete, or walls. What do you think about this innovation? In the Netherlands (and across Europe), road authorities are testing “virtual fencing” concepts to reduce wildlife accidents — using light-based and sensor-triggered systems instead of physical barriers. The idea is simple: • Don’t trap animals • Don’t block migration paths • Guide behavior only when danger exists When a vehicle approaches, roadside systems activate light (and sometimes sound) cues that discourage deer and other wildlife from crossing at that moment, while still allowing free movement when roads are quiet. No permanent fences. No habitat fragmentation. No concrete scars across nature. Why this matters Traditional wildlife fencing works — but at a cost: • Broken ecosystems • Altered migration routes • Expensive infrastructure Virtual fencing flips the model: • Protection without confinement • Safety without separation • Infrastructure that responds, not dominates Is it literally “laser walls animals see as fences”... Not exactly. But the principle is real: Use perception, timing, and behavior — not brute force. It is Influenced by lifestyles, innovation of material, social structures, cultural aspirations, and craftsmanship. Dwellings have never been just about utility to serve basic human needs, they have been forms of our inner expressions. What we take for granted today at home, a century ago, would have been unimaginable luxury. Beyond comfort, we can stream the best music, bring movie halls into our home theaters, and play any game on our Wii. Buildings nowadays are not built just for comfort. They offer a plethora of choices to express our identity. One of the less discussed influences on architecture is epidemics. My long term interest in architectural evolution has always come back to understanding the underlying influences Diseases like Cholera changed our homes to include better sanitation systems and sewer management. Poor sanitary conditions provide ample opportunity to contract disease. Tuberculosis drove modern architecture to bring light and air into the design. Architecture evolved to reduce diseases. Of course, we are unlikely to get tuberculosis in modern homes, but we are more likely to get cancer with materials like Aluminum and other carcinogenic materials that surround us today. Today, architectural innovators will need to find solutions to the most pressing issues of our time: environmental sustainability. In this spirit of innovation and sustainability, the architecture studio, Wallmakers has repurposed approximately 6,200 discarded toys to construct the walls of Toy Storey, a circular home in Kerala. The circular design of Toy Storey is a deliberate and strategic choice. Circular shapes distribute stress evenly, providing structural stability, and symbolize the cyclical nature of sustainability. The residence is conceived with the idea of a “house within a house” where neighbors and community members will always frequent the large living space, but the Japanese-style inspired shoji screens become translucent partitions providing light and visual connectivity for the private half. The colorful toys embedded in the, as the designers call it, “Toy Jaali Wall”, with the traditional Mangalore tiles create a mosaic-like effect, making it a work of art. This project challenges conventional notions and also reminds me of the enduring power of playfulness and creativity. We need more such spaces that celebrate ingenuity and determination. In the end, the choice is ours — cling to the norm, or dare to reimagine and choose the path less traveled.     In 2012 I sat through an amazing talk on 3d printing human organs at the Fab 8 conference which we hosted in New Zealand. More than a decade later and scientists are 3D-printing conductive circuits inside living organisms. Biology is becoming a design medium. This is not a metaphor, but an engineering discipline with reusable components, version control, and design-build-test-learn loops. Researchers are already using AI to write genetic code. They’re designing drug molecules, proteins, and genetic circuits before building them in a lab. Wearable systems can now monitor patient vital signs and predict deterioration up to 17 hours in advance. MIT has turned cement into an energy storage medium. These are not just weak signals of possible futures. They're in clinical trials, field tests, and early production. This is what the next wave of hard problems looks like. Not digital, but biological, material, and physical. The domains that resisted the first wave of digital transformation (think health, food systems, built environments) are now seeing a different kind of change. One that requires design approaches that stretch what it means to design and be a designer. The design methods we've developed over the past 30 years were built for a world where you design something, hand it over, and it does what it was made to do (hopefully!) These systems are different. They adapt and respond to different conditions. They possess something closer to behaviour than function. We are seeing evolving methodologies for designing with living systems and emerging ethical frameworks. There are also designers who are pioneering new spaces for design as a discipline to expand into. But these new arenas also require different skills, perspectives and knowledge systems than those traditional designers would recognise. What do you think?     A pharmacy in India did something quietly revolutionary for women’s hygiene… And it’s a masterclass in designing with empathy. Here’s the uncomfortable truth: In India, buying sanitary pads is still shrouded in shame. Women whisper at counters. Fathers avoid the aisle entirely. Husbands feel awkward purchasing for their wives. The product isn’t the problem. The experience is. I spotted this pharmacy in Coimbatore, and they’ve completely reimagined how sensitive products are accessed. What they did: → Created TWO separate experiences under one roof → Counter service for general medicines (traditional model) → Walk-in section exclusively for women’s hygiene and baby care → Shelves openly displaying sanitary napkins, intimate care, baby diapers, women’s razors, urinary care products → No need to ask. No need to explain. Just walk in, browse, pick up what you need. The result: Women can shop without shame. Family members can purchase without awkwardness. Products that were hidden are now visible. And conversations that were whispered can finally happen openly. This isn’t just retail design. It’s social design. It’s using space and experience to challenge taboos without saying a word. When we design from first principles and ask “What does the user actually need?” not just functionally, but emotionally, we create solutions that change behavior. Precise, but not always intuitive.     The simplest way I've ever heard creativity described is this: "Find two things that wouldn't normally go together - and put them together." At first, this seemed way too simple. Creativity is supposed to be this complex, mysterious force - how could it be reduced to such a basic formula? Then I noticed it everywhere In 2008, three designers in San Francisco couldn't make rent. Their city was hosting an upcoming design conference, and hotels were fully booked. Looking around their apartment, they had an idea that seemed absurd at the time: What if they put air mattresses on their floor and offered designers a place to stay, with breakfast included? Air mattresses + Bed & Breakfast = Airbnb According to a Harvard Business Review study, 72% of all innovations come from combining existing ideas in new ways. Creativity thrives on connecting existing elements in fresh combinations rather than inventing entirely new things. Look at how this principle transformed B2B software: Slack combined instant messaging with enterprise software HubSpot merged CRM with marketing automation Notion blended documents with databases Figma connected design tools with real-time collaboration Zapier united different software through automation Even newer B2B innovations follow this pattern: AI + Sales Calls = Gong's conversation intelligence Spreadsheets + No-Code = Airtable's flexible workspace Documentation + AI = Notion AI's content generation The magic lies in developing the capacity to notice what others miss - looking deeply past the ordinary to find unexpected combinations.     Conscious Product Innovation Most brands still “innovate” by playing around with colorways or changing materials. That’s not really REAL innovation. Conscious product innovation isn’t about doing more things. It’s about doing the RIGHT THINGS - intentionally, intelligently, and aligned with the brand purpose, values, mission/vision and with the world we actually live in in 2025. Here’s why I believe it matters: - The next decade will reward relevance over cheap ideas. - Customers are bored of “new drops” and want true meaning. - Legislations are forcing brands to prove their sustainability claims. - And sustainability isn’t a “niche” anymore, it’s bakes in the brand foundation. So how do you innovate consciously? Here are 8 ideas: 1. Design backwards from the afterlife. Instead of asking “What’s next season?”, ask “What happens to this product after its last use?” Build take-back, resale, or repair into the DNA of your collection. 2. Kill the hero product way ( I know it sounds “wrong, so bare with me). Most brands depend on one or a few products that brings in all the margin. You can think in modular ecosystems - where every product connects and extends the lifespan of others. 3. Replace design briefs with problem solving. Stop writing briefing for aesthetics. Start looking at fro a impact perspective. “How can we reduce micro-fiber shedding by 50%?”. “How can we extend the life of this product by at least 2x without increasing cost?” 4. Involve your suppliers at the product range and sketch stage. The most sustainable ideas die in sourcing because it’s too late. Co-create with your suppliers. They often know better, cheaper, faster ways to make your idea circular. 5. Prototype with your community. Test new ideas with your community before production. You can drop pieces in limited test runs and let your audience guide you. It’s co-creation. 6. Use data as your creative partner. Predict demand. Kill overproduction. Connect customer feedback loops directly into your design system. Innovation without data is just expensive intuition. Use Portia for this. 7. Set design constraints that drive creativity. Example: “We only use 3 mono-fiber materials this season.” Constraints force innovation through limits - and simplify circular design dramatically. 8. Turn your waste into R&D. Every return, damaged product, or leftover roll is a prototype waiting to happen. Use it to test recycling processes, disassembly, or hybrid materials. Brands don’t do this because:  - It’s “never been done like this before”. - It challenges power structures. - It requires collaboration, not silos. - It replaces the “seasonal hamster wheel” with a circular flywheel. I believe the future belongs to the brands that innovate consciously, not constantly. That's brands that combine data, design, and purpose to create products that deserve to exist. And when brands do that, circularity, loyalty, and profit can follow naturally.
