STRUCTURAL PATTERNS
А. Gerund and Participle I as Adverbial Modifiers
He pointed without looking, because he was busy reading.
He added loftily, pronouncing the word carefully.
He walked away whistling …
All the kids from the whole neighborhood came, laughing and shouting in
the schoolyard, sitting together in the schoolroom, going home together at
the end of the day.
Present participles and gerunds (introduced by prepositions) serve as
adverbial modifiers, for instance, as modifiers of manner and time:
We were able to complete the project in Мы все-таки смогли завершить
time (by) working around the clock. проект, работая без остановки /
круглые сутки
He left without looking back. Он ушел, даже не обернувшись.
You should check the oil before starting Надо проверить уровень масла,
the car. прежде чем заводить машину.
If a participle is placed at the beginning of a sentence, it may express a
causative meaning. E.g.:
Seeing no one in the garden, Mona went Не видя никого в саду, Мона прошла
back into the house. обратно в дом.
Being honest and upright, John couldn’t Будучи прямым и честным
hide the truth from her. человеком, Джон не мог скрыть от
нее правду.
Participle I following the predicative verb often denotes an action that is
complementary to the action expressed by the predicate:
She sat in an armchair listening to the Она сидела в кресле, слушая музыку
music. / и слушала музыку.
The doctor arrived at the scene, Доктор, с саквояжем в руке,
carrying a surgeon’s chest. прибыл на место.
В. USED TO DO\WOULD DO\BE USED TO DOING
This is the old kind of school that they used to have hundreds and hundreds of
years ago.
The construction used to do serves to express a recurrent action in the past. It
also implies a contrast: what commonly happened in the past no longer takes place
now. Used to do always has a past meaning, there is no present tense form. E.g.:
I used to go shopping almost every day Когда у меня имелось больше
when I had more spare time. Now that времени, я, бывало, почти каждый
I’m so busy, I prefer to shop from home. день ходила по магазинам. Теперь я
так занята, что предпочитаю делать
покупки, не выходя из дома.
“I thought you were great friends.” – «Я думал, вы большие друзья». –
“Oh, no. We just used to go to school «Ничего подобного, мы просто
together.” когда-то ходили вместе в школу».
Did you use to call at the nice little café Когда вы жили в Ливерпуле, вы
in Lombard Street when you were in ходили (имели обыкновение ходить)
Liverpool? в уютное маленькое кафе на Ломбард
Стрит?
Unlike the Past Perfect Tense form, ‘used to’ does not convey the idea of a
prior action:
(1) When a child, I used to swim in the В детстве я любила плавать в реке.
river.
(2) We were all astonished that Nicolas Мы все очень удивились, что
had swum to the shore. Николас доплыл до берега.
WOULD DO is used to express past habits or describes a person’s typical
behaviour in the past.
In the summer we would get up early Летом мы, бывало, вставали рано и
and run to the sea for a swim. бежали к морю купаться.
WOULD DO is not used with state verbs.
I used to have a pet dog. I would have a Когда-то (раньше) у меня была
pet dog. собака.
Be careful not to confuse ‘used to do’ with ‘be used to doing’ (synonymous to the
expression ‘be accustomed to, be in the habit of’) or ‘get used to doing’
(synonymous to the expression ‘get, become accustomed to’).
I'm not used to eating so much at Я не привык так много есть на обед.
lunchtime.
I can’t get used to getting up early. Не могу привыкнуть вставать рано.
