How to define the gender of noun
Masculine nouns generally end with consonant, “ь” and “й” (though, “ь” and “й”
are consonants, too).
Feminine nouns generally end with “а”, “я”and “ь”.
Neuter nouns generally end with “o” or “e”.
Seems that only nouns ending with “ь” are a bit complicated.
Genitive forms of masculine nouns
Last letter is “ь” Genitive is formed by removing “ь” and adding “я”.
Last letter is “й” Genitive is formed by removing “й” and adding “я”.
Genitive for masculine nouns ending with consonant is formed by just adding “а”.
EXAMPLES: автобус – автобуса (ends with consonant add “а”)
родитель – родителя (ends with “ь” remove “ь” and add “я”)
музей – музея (ends with “й” remove “й” and add “я”)
Genitive forms of feminine nouns
Last letter is “а” Genitive is formed by removing “а” and adding “ы” or “и”
(statistically “и” is used in case of “к”, “г”, “х”, “ч” before the last one).
Last letter is “я” Genitive is formed by removing “я” and adding “и”.
Last letter is “ь” Genitive is formed by removing “ь” and adding “и”
EXAMPLES: бабочка – бабочки (ends with “a”, the letter before “a” is “к” remove “a” and add “и”)
регистрация – регистрации (ends with “я” remove “я” and add “и”)
кровать – кровати (ends with “ь” remove “ь” and add “и”)
беседа – беседы (ends with “a”, the letter before “a” is not “к”, “г”, “х” or “ч” remove “a”
and add “и”)
Genitive forms of neuter nouns
Last letter is “o” Genitive is formed by removing “o” and adding “a”.
Last letter is “e” Genitive is formed by removing “e” and adding “я”.
EXAMPLES: утро –утра (ends with “o” remove “o” and add “а”)
приглашение – приглашения (ends with “е” remove “е” and add “я”)
NOTE that all of Genitive endings mentioned above are quite not a rule, but a
90-95%-reliable statistics, the same for defining noun’s gender by last letter.
A1/1 – Grammar: part 2
Adjective + Noun
When adjective is used to describe a noun, the form of adjective is changed
according to gender of noun. Adjective form given in any dictionary is masculine +
singular by default.
Masculine (default) Feminine Neuter
Endings of adjective -“ий”, -“ый”, -“ой” -“ая”, “-яя” -“ое”, -“ее”
In case of masculine form of adjective ending with –“ий” to chose between -“ая”
(fem), -“ое” (neut) and -“яя” (fem), -“ее” (neut) look at the vowel before the
ending. If it is “е”, “ё”, “и”, “ю” or “я” – chose –“яя” for feminine form and –
“ее” for neuter form. In other cases chose –“ая” for feminine form and –“ое” for
neuter form.
EXAMPLES: yellow book жёлтый + книга жёлтая книга (because “книга” is feminine)
expensive car дорогой + автомобиль дорогой автомобиль (“автомобиль” is masculine,
no change in adjective ending, because they’re masculine by default)
cloudy morning облачный + утро облачное утро (because “утро” is neuter)
(dark) blue can синий + банка синяя банка (we choose -“яя” (not -“ая”) because the vowel
before ending is “a”, which is not among “е”, “ё”, “и”, “ю” or “я”)
ALGORITHM: 1. Take an adjective and noun
2. Look at noun’s gender: masculine – go to 2.1; feminine – go to 2.2; neuter – go to 2.3
2.1. Leave adjective unchanged and go to 3
2.2. Look at default adj. ending: -“ий” – go to 2.2.1; other – go to 2.2.2
2.2.1. Look at the vowel before ending: “е”, “ё”, “и”, “ю” or “я” – to [Link]; else [Link]
[Link]. Change adj ending to –“яя” and go to 3
[Link]. Change adj ending to – “ая” and go to 3
2.2.2. Change adj ending to – “ая” and go to 3
2.3. Look at default adj. ending: -“ий” – go to 2.3.1; other – go to 2.3.2
2.3.1. Look at the vowel before ending: “е”, “ё”, “и”, “ю” or “я” – to [Link]; else [Link]
[Link]. Change adj ending to –“ее” and go to 3
[Link]. Change adj ending to – “ое” and go to 3
2.3.2. Change adj ending to – “ое” and go to 3
3. Combine adjective with ending you defined by algorithm with noun. Profit! ;)
Adjective + Noun in Genitive
In Genitive both ending of noun and ending of adjective are changed (actually
adjective is a companion of noun and they do everything together ). The “rule” for
nouns was mentioned somewhere above, it’s the same when noun is in couple with
adjective, the rule of adjective’s endings is much easier.
Gender Ending of adj in Nominative Ending of adj in Genitive
Masculine -“ий” -“его”
Masculine -“ый” -“ого”
Masculine -“ой” -“ого”
Feminine -“ая” -“ой”

голубой конверт (Nom) голубого конверта (Gen)
дорогая квартира (Nom) дорогой квартиры (Gen)
последняя встреча (Nom) последней встречи (Gen)
