IF-CLAUSES – Teorie completă (nivel C2)
Propozițiile condiționale exprimă o relație de condiție și rezultat (condition – result). În
engleză, sunt formate din două părți:
If-clause (propoziția condițională)
Main clause (propoziția principală)
1. Zero Conditional
Structură:
If + Present Simple, Present Simple
Utilizare:
– adevăruri generale, legi ale naturii, reguli, relații cauzale
Exemple:
If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.
If people don’t drink water, they die.
2. First Conditional
Structură:
If + Present Simple, will + verb (sau can/may/might/must)
Utilizare:
– condiții reale sau posibile în viitor
Exemple:
If it rains tomorrow, we will cancel the picnic.
If she studies hard, she might pass the exam.
3. Second Conditional
Structură:
🔹 If + Past Simple, would + verb
Utilizare:
– condiții ipotetice/imaginare în prezent sau viitor
– situații improbabile sau imposibile
Exemple:
If I were rich, I would travel the world.
If he didn’t smoke, he would be healthier.
🔎 Notă: "If I were" este forma formală/standard, deși "If I was" apare în conversație informală.

Structură:
🔹 If + Past Perfect, would have + past participle
Utilizare:
– situații ipotetice din trecut, imposibil de schimbat
Exemple:
If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.
If they had left earlier, they wouldn’t have missed the train.
🔁 Tipuri MIXTE (Mixed Conditionals)
Combină părți din diferite tipuri de propoziții pentru a exprima idei complexe despre timpuri
diferite (condiția e într-un timp, rezultatul în altul).
A. Past → Present
🔹 If + Past Perfect, would + verb (prezent ipotetic cu cauză în trecut)
Exemplu:
If you had taken the job, you would be living in London now.
B. Present → Past
🔹 If + Past Simple, would have + past participle
(condiție imaginară în prezent → rezultat ipotetic în trecut)
Exemplu:
If she were more careful, she wouldn’t have made that mistake.

Inversiunea formală (Inversion – fără „if”)
Se folosește în registru formal sau literar.

Extensii avansate ale propozițiilor condiționale – Nivel C2
✅ 1. Condiționale implicite
Condiția nu este exprimată printr-o propoziție cu „if”, ci subînțeleasă din context.
🔹 With a bit more time, I could have finished the task.
➡ (Dacă aș fi avut puțin mai mult timp...)
🔹 One more step, and you would have fallen.
➡ (Dacă mai făceai un pas...)
🔹 But for your help, I wouldn’t have succeeded.
➡ (Dacă nu era ajutorul tău...)
✅ 2. Condensarea structurii condiționale în construcții participiale
🔹 Had he arrived on time, things would be different now.
➡ combinație de inversiune și structură condensată
🔹 Being more experienced, she would have handled it better.
➡ echivalentul lui If she had been more experienced...
3. Condiționale contrafactuale în limbaj retoric / dezbateri
Se folosesc pentru a introduce ipoteze speculative, critici indirecte sau contraste de idei.
🔹 Were governments to act decisively, the crisis might be mitigated.

➡ stil formal, folosit în eseuri academice și discursuri.
🔹 Had the authorities taken action earlier, the outcome would have been different.
4. Cond. complexe cu mai multe verbe modale
🔹 If she had studied harder, she might have been able to get a scholarship.
➡ „might have been able to” combină probabilitate + capacitate.
🔹 If we had started earlier, we could have avoided the traffic and would have arrived on time.
➡ Două consecințe ipotetice în același enunț.
5. Propoziții condiționale într-un registru literar sau poetic
Adesea cu inversiuni sau cu expresii eliptice, pentru efect stilistic.
🔹 Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths... (W.B. Yeats)
➡ (If I had...) – stil poetic, fără „if”.
🔹 Were it not for love, what would remain of poetry?
➡ condițional retoric, cu funcție de reflecție.
