Observe os exemplos a seguir:

Os verbos grifados estão conjugados no simple past, referem-se
a ações que ocorreram e foram finalizadas no passado.
Pelo discurso, fica claro o momento temporal em que ocorreram
as ações a que se faz referência, ou é possível inferir isso pelo
contexto.
Affirmative form
A regra geral para formação do simple past é
relativamente simples, mas é preciso estar
atento a algumas características dos verbos.
1. Deve-se acrescentar -ed à maioria dos verbos regulares.
ask – asked
play – played
wash – washed

2. Deve-se acrescentar apenas -d a verbos regulares que
terminam em -e.
create – created
love – loved
type – typed

3. Deve-se duplicar a última consoante de verbos regulares
monossilábicos terminados em consoante + vogal +
consoante antes de acrescentar -ed.
drop – dropped
shop – shopped
stop – stopped

4. Quando o verbo é regular e termina em consoante + Y,
deve-se trocar o Y por I antes de acrescentar -ed.
cry – cried
hurry – hurried
study – studied

5. Não se deve adicionar -ed na forma afirmativa de verbos
irregulares no passado.
eat – ate
do – did
sell – sold
Negative Form
A forma negativa é feita com o auxiliar
did + not (= didn’t)
logo após o sujeito, mantendo-se o verbo
em sua forma base.
We didn’t have an English class yesterday.
Christian didn’t come back last month.
Mom didn’t want to watch the news.
Interrogative Form
Para fazer perguntas no simple past,
deve-se usar o auxiliar did.
Neste caso, posicioná-lo antes do sujeito da oração
e manter o verbo em sua forma base.
Did you sleep late yesterday?
Did Joe bring you to school today?
What time did the movie finish?
