Common questions

Com tecnologia de IA

'Should' and 'ought to' both express advice, but 'should' is more commonly used and can carry a slightly stronger suggestion than 'ought to.' For example, 'You should listen to your mother' denotes a strong recommendation, whereas 'You ought to call the police' is slightly softer in tone .

'Could' is used in questions about the past to imply ability or permission, such as 'Could I talk to the director?' indicating if it was ever possible or allowed. In the present or future, it retains this use for tentative requests or inquiries about less probable outcomes, such as 'Could you help me?' implying politeness or conditional possibility .

'Would' is used instead of 'will' to express future actions in conditional sentences or when discussing hypothetical scenarios, e.g., 'If I had your number, I would call you tomorrow.' It indicates a sense of politeness or describes actions contingent on certain conditions .

'Can' is a modal verb used to express permission, capacity, ability, and possibility. As permission: 'Can I go to the toilet?' It denotes capacity/ability in: 'He can speak three languages fluently,' and possibility in: 'We can go to the movies.'

The modal verb 'should' would be best for expressing a recommendation, as it offers advice with a sense of urgency or priority. For example, 'You should take this job. It’s perfect for you,' suggests strong encouragement .

'Could' is often more appropriate than 'can' when asking for permission in more formal or polite contexts. For instance, 'Could I talk to the director?' implies more politeness compared to 'Can I talk to the director?'

'May' is more appropriate than 'can' when making a request in formal situations or when politeness is required. For instance, 'May I drink some water?' is polite and suitable for formal contexts, as opposed to 'Can I drink some water?' which is more direct and casual .

'Might' conveys a higher degree of uncertainty compared to 'may'. For instance, 'It might be sunny on the weekend' suggests less certainty than 'It may rain tomorrow,' where 'may' presents the possibility with more neutrality .

'Must' can express obligation, as in 'You must pay your bills,' implying necessity. In contrast, it indicates a logical conclusion or deduction in 'Laura must be sick. She didn't come to school today,' suggesting a strong logical inference rather than obligatory action .

In British English, 'shall' is traditionally used with 'I' and 'we' to express future actions, e.g., 'I shall be there at 8.' It carries a tone of formality or suggestion but has largely been replaced by 'will' in contemporary usage, which is less formal and more prevalent in American English to denote future actions .
