Words from the Sponsor
We invest, by means of Petrobras Socioenvironment Program, in initiatives focused on protection
and recovery of species and habitats, preserving and conserving the biodiversity in aquatic and
terrestrial ecosystems. Besides, we also support projects across the country that develop actions
towards the following acting lines: education, inclusive and sustainable production, biodiversity,
water, forest and climate, sports and assuring the rights of children and teenagers.
Contemplated in 2010, in a national public selection, Islands of Rio Project is one of these initiatives.
In the second stage of the Project, developed since 2013, we can point out the social mobilization
on Cagarras Islands Natural Monument, which began in 2011, and the expansion of the studies in
marine and terrestrial environments of Rasa Island and Tijucas and Maricás Archipelagos.
“Islands of Rio” presents the achieved results over these four years of research, in which was
possible to register different angles of the rich biodiversity and landscapes that can be found in
these insular ecosystems. There are underwater, terrestrial and aerial photographs that allow
everyone to get closer to this beauty, and that stimulate the preservation of the islands, that are
so close and, at the same time, so diverse, in Rio’s coast.
We, of Petrobras, are proud to sponsor this publication, which collaborates to promoting the
environment’s conservation.

É paradoxal a nossa situação.
É a tarefa civilizatória
que nos é colocada.
Although there is a great productive rupture of the natural elements that maintain our society - such
as soil, water, forest, climate, oceans… - it is worth pointing out that there is available in society a
sufficient number of capable human resources, countless structured institutions (ranging from local
to global levels), technologies and financial resources. Our situation is a paradox. Nevertheless, we
depend on the link between these same elements to promote the great transition needed. This is a
civilizing task set upon us.
We can realize the transition towards sustainability as a political process that could be built.
The challenge is to raise in society and its individuals a sense of urgency to promote a human
introduction to the natural laws. Reversing the loss of balance in the natural processes should be
considered as a huge human and universal ethic imperative, moving individual and collective forces
able to propel a true environmental revolution that guarantees a friendly operation of the world’s
ecosystems for every generation. Taking good care of our coastal areas and oceans is essential to
this process. However, we wage an insane war against ourselves in a daily basis. Are we willing to
avoid this great rupture and develop this great transition? Are we willing to sail these seas?
Once, John Maynard Keynes said, describing the challenges in deep changes: “the difficulty doesn’t lie
in developing new ideas, but in escaping the old ones.”

Preface
Thus Cagarras Islands Natural Monument (created in 2010) leaves its early childhood, a time that
is said to be character building to humans and defined by a period of daily discoveries. Five years
have gone by bringing to light countless knowledge through the brains and lenses of Islands of Rio
Project. New species and records to Rio’s fauna and flora have been frequent, and the scenery and
details of its lush biodiversity have filled up the curious and proud eyes of the creators, sponsors and
partners of this endeavor.
Islands are peculiar magnets, which draw us in and make our imagination heat up easily. It is
impossible to precise how many minds have found themselves, even if for just a few moments,
wondering about the Islands of Rio since their pristine times to the crowded carioca beaches on
a weekend nowadays. Even those people whose routines are closely in contact with the islands
cannot get away unscathed from their ability to surprise and to renew desires.
This book is a passport to a trip of unique scenic beauty and to the enchantments, subtleties and
secrets of biodiversity uncovered by Islands of Rio Project: breathtaking landscapes, animals and
plants that seem to inhabit our wildest childhood dreams rather than be part of someone’s day-to-
day reality. It is, first and foremost, a generous work for providing an opportunity to experience the
islands through the researchers’ pioneer eyes.
Furthermore, the book is an awestrucking invitation for readers to participate and to engage
themselves in conserving our insular ecosystems. Cagarras Islands Natural Monument/ICMBio, a Rio
de Janeiro postcard, asks permission to send this request: visit, take part, contribute and get involved
in the archipelagos’ conservation and preservation. The next generation will be grateful for that.

Tinha início o Projeto Ilhas do
Indo além, as
principalmente o olhar e a emoção desses profissionais.
fragatas do Brasil.

Introduction
In April 2011, a group of scientists started a series of researches on Rio’s shore islands, many of
which unprecedented in the area. Cagarras Islands Natural Monument, just 5 km away from
Ipanema beach, became the first study focus. So was the beginning of Islands of Rio Project, which
uncovered an impressive explosion of life of the carioca seaside. Going further, the studies included
Maricás, Tijucas and Rasa islands, barely explored by science, and led to incredible discoveries
about these ecosystems.
The present work, entitled “Islands of Rio”, shows not only the scientific findings, but specially
these professionals’ view and feelings. Breathtaking landscapes, extraordinary scenery and odd
behaviors are just some of the things experienced in unique opportunities and hereby reproduced.
Throughout countless images, the islands are presented as an amazing postcard and a relevant
haven for the biodiversity, unimaginably close to a big Brazilian metropolis.
Among some other peculiarities, hundreds of fauna and flora species have been documented on
the Cagarras Islands alone, which is home to Brazil’s second largest breeding ground of brown
boobies and frigatebirds. On the terrestrial area, we can see tegu lizards and bromeligen treefrogs,
only found in this region. The flora is similar to sandbank vegetation and includes plants considered
extinct in Rio de Janeiro’s mainland, which means that the place holds pristine characteristics of
the city. Moreover, the Natural Monument houses an archeological site, evidence to the Tupiguarani
people’s occupation in the pre-colonial period. The underwater world is enchanting! There, one
can observe great cetaceans, like groups of bottlenose dolphins or humpback whales, swimming
around the islands, occasionally with younglings among them. Furthermore, it is easy to identify
great predators, such as morays and groupers, as well as colorful coral reef fish, including French
angelfish and butterflyfish. We can also find green turtles resting on the rocky walls. Meanwhile,
benthic organisms transform the rocks on the seabottom into huge colorful carpets of sponges,
corals and algae. The relationship between Man and Nature is close and this book’s approach
allows people to experience all the sides of the Islands of Rio.
