Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita 1 Midway in the journey of our life
mi ritrovai per una selva oscura, 2 I came to myself in a dark wood,
ché la diritta via era smarrita. 3 for the straight way was lost.
Ahi quanto a dir qual era è cosa dura 4 Ah, how hard it is to tell
esta selva selvaggia e aspra e forte 5 the nature of that wood, savage, dense and harsh --
che nel pensier rinova la paura! 6 the very thought of it renews my fear!
Tant' è amara che poco è più morte; 7 It is so bitter death is hardly more so.
ma per trattar del ben ch'i' vi trovai, 8 But to set forth the good I found
dirò de l'altre cose ch'i' v'ho scorte. 9 I will recount the other things I saw.
Io non so ben ridir com' i' v'intrai, 10 How I came there I cannot really tell,
tant' era pien di sonno a quel punto 11 I was so full of sleep
che la verace via abbandonai. 12 when I forsook the one true way.
Ma poi ch'i' fui al piè d'un colle giunto, 13 But when I reached the foot of a hill,
là dove terminava quella valle 14 there where the valley ended
che m'avea di paura il cor compunto, 15 that had pierced my heart with fear,
guardai in alto e vidi le sue spalle 16 looking up, I saw its shoulders
vestite già de' raggi del pianeta 17 arrayed in the first light of the planet
che mena dritto altrui per ogne calle. 18 that leads men straight, no matter what their road.
Allor fu la paura un poco queta, 19 Then the fear that had endured
che nel lago del cor m'era durata 20 in the lake of my heart, all the night
la notte ch'i' passai con tanta pieta. 21 I spent in such distress, was calmed.
E come quei che con lena affannata, 22 And as one who, with laboring breath,
uscito fuor del pelago a la riva, 23 has escaped from the deep to the shore
si volge a l'acqua perigliosa e guata, 24 turns and looks back at the perilous waters,
così l'animo mio, ch'ancor fuggiva, 25 so my mind, still in flight,
si volse a retro a rimirar lo passo 26 turned back to look once more upon the pass
che non lasciò già mai persona viva. 27 no mortal being ever left alive.
Poi ch'èi posato un poco il corpo lasso, 28 After I rested my wearied flesh a while,
ripresi via per la piaggia diserta, 29 I took my way again along the desert slope,
sì che 'l piè fermo sempre era 'l più basso. 30 my firm foot always lower than the other.
Ed ecco, quasi al cominciar de l'erta, 31 But now, near the beginning of the steep,
una lonza leggera e presta molto, 32 a leopard light and swift
che di pel macolato era coverta; 33 and covered with a spotted pelt
e non mi si partia dinanzi al volto, 34 refused to back away from me
anzi 'mpediva tanto il mio cammino, 35 but so impeded, barred the way,
ch'i' fui per ritornar più volte vòlto. 36 that many times I turned to go back down.
Temp' era dal principio del mattino, 37 It was the hour of morning,
e 'l sol montava 'n sù con quelle stelle 38 when the sun mounts with those stars
ch'eran con lui quando l'amor divino 39 that shone with it when God's own love
mosse di prima quelle cose belle; 40 first set in motion those fair things,
sì ch'a bene sperar m'era cagione 41 so that, despite that beast with gaudy fur,
di quella fiera a la gaetta pelle 42 I still could hope for good, encouraged
l'ora del tempo e la dolce stagione; 43 by the hour of the day and the sweet season,
ma non sì che paura non mi desse 44 only to be struck by fear
la vista che m'apparve d'un leone. 45 when I beheld a lion in my way.
Questi parea che contra me venisse 46 He seemed about to pounce --
con la test' alta e con rabbiosa fame, 47 his head held high and furious with hunger --
sì che parea che l'aere ne tremesse. 48 so that the air appeared to tremble at him.

Ed una lupa, che di tutte brame 49 And then a she-wolf who, all hide and bones,
sembiava carca ne la sua magrezza, 50 seemed charged with all the appetites
e molte genti fé già viver grame, 51 that have made many live in wretchedness
questa mi porse tanto di gravezza 52 so weighed my spirits down with terror,
con la paura ch'uscia di sua vista, 53 which welled up at the sight of her,
ch'io perdei la speranza de l'altezza. 54 that I lost hope of making the ascent.
E qual è quei che volontieri acquista, 55 And like one who rejoices in his gains
e giugne 'l tempo che perder lo face, 56 but when the time comes and he loses,
che 'n tutti suoi pensier piange e s'attrista; 57 turns all his thought to sadness and lament,
tal mi fece la bestia sanza pace, 58 such did the restless beast make me --
che, venendomi 'ncontro, a poco a poco 59 coming against me, step by step,
mi ripigneva là dove 'l sol tace. 60 it drove me down to where the sun is silent.
Mentre ch'i' rovinava in basso loco, 61 While I was fleeing to a lower place,
dinanzi a li occhi mi si fu offerto 62 before my eyes a figure showed,
chi per lungo silenzio parea fioco. 63 faint, in the wide silence.
Quando vidi costui nel gran diserto, 64 When I saw him in that vast desert,
"Miserere di me," gridai a lui, 65 'Have mercy on me, whatever you are,'
"qual che tu sii, od ombra od omo certo!" 66 I cried, 'whether shade or living man!'
Rispuosemi: "Non omo, omo già fui, 67 He answered: 'Not a man, though once I was.
e li parenti miei furon lombardi, 68 My parents were from Lombardy --
mantoani per patrïa ambedui. 69 Mantua was their homeland.
Nacqui sub Iulio, ancor che fosse tardi, 70 'I was born sub Julio, though late in his time,
e vissi a Roma sotto 'l buono Augusto 71 and lived at Rome, under good Augustus
nel tempo de li dèi falsi e bugiardi. 72 in an age of false and lying gods.
Poeta fui, e cantai di quel giusto 73 'I was a poet and I sang
figliuol d'Anchise che venne di Troia, 74 the just son of Anchises come from Troy
poi che 'l superbo Ilïón fu combusto. 75 after proud Ilium was put to flame.
Ma tu perché ritorni a tanta noia? 76 'But you, why are you turning back to misery?
perché non sali il dilettoso monte 77 Why do you not climb the peak that gives delight,
ch'è principio e cagion di tutta goia?" 78 origin and cause of every joy?'
"Or se' tu quel Virgilio e quella fonte 79 'Are you then Virgil, the fountainhead
che spandi di parlar sì largo fiume?" 80 that pours so full a stream of speech?'
rispuos' io lui con vergognosa fronte. 81 I answered him, my head bent low in shame.
"O de li altri poeti onore e lume, 82 'O glory and light of all other poets,
vagliami 'l lungo studio e 'l grande amore 83 let my long study and great love avail
che m'ha fatto cercar lo tuo volume. 84 that made me delve so deep into your volume.
Tu se' lo mio maestro e 'l mio autore, 85 'You are my teacher and my author.
tu se' solo colui da cu' io tolsi 86 You are the one from whom alone I took
lo bello stilo che m'ha fatto onore. 87 the noble style that has brought me honor.
Vedi la bestia per cu' io mi volsi; 88 'See the beast that forced me to turn back.
aiutami da lei, famoso saggio, 89 Save me from her, famous sage --
ch'ella mi fa tremar le vene e i polsi." 90 she makes my veins and pulses tremble.'
"A te convien tenere altro vïaggio," 91 'It is another path that you must follow,'
rispuose, poi che lagrimar mi vide, 92 he answered, when he saw me weeping,
"se vuo' campar d'esto loco selvaggio; 93 'if you would flee this wild and savage place.
ché questa bestia, per la qual tu gride, 94 'For the beast that moves you to cry out
non lascia altrui passar per la sua via, 95 lets no man pass her way,
ma tanto lo 'mpedisce che l'uccide; 96 but so besets him that she slays him.
e ha natura sì malvagia e ria, 97 'Her nature is so vicious and malign
che mai non empie la bramosa voglia, 98 her greedy appetite is never sated --
e dopo 'l pasto ha più fame che pria. 99 after she feeds she is hungrier than ever.
Molti son li animali a cui s'ammoglia, 100 'Many are the creatures that she mates with,
e più saranno ancora, infin che 'l veltro 101 and there will yet be more, until the hound
verrà, che la farà morir con doglia. 102 shall come who'll make her die in pain.
Questi non ciberà terra né peltro, 103 'He shall not feed on lands or lucre

ma sapïenza, amore e virtute, 104 but on wisdom, love, and power.
e sua nazion sarà tra feltro e feltro. 105 Between felt and felt shall be his birth.
Di quella umile Italia fia salute 106 'He shall be the salvation of low-lying Italy,
per cui morì la vergine Cammilla, 107 for which maiden Camilla, Euryalus,
Eurialo e Turno e Niso di ferute. 108 Turnus, and Nisus died of their wounds.
Questi la caccerà per ogne villa, 109 'He shall hunt the beast through every town
fin che l'avrà rimessa ne lo 'nferno, 110 till he has sent her back to Hell
là onde 'nvidia prima dipartilla. 111 whence primal envy set her loose.
Ond' io per lo tuo me' penso e discerno 112 'Therefore, for your sake, I think it wise
che tu mi segui, e io sarò tua guida, 113 you follow me: I will be your guide,
e trarrotti di qui per loco etterno; 114 leading you, from here, through an eternal place
ove udirai le disperate strida, 115 'where you shall hear despairing cries
vedrai li antichi spiriti dolenti, 116 and see those ancient souls in pain
ch'a la seconda morte ciascun grida; 117 as they bewail their second death.
e vederai color che son contenti 118 'Then you shall see the ones who are content
nel foco, perché speran di venire 119 to burn because they hope to come,
quando che sia a le beate genti. 120 whenever it may be, among the blessed.
A le quai poi se tu vorrai salire, 121 'Should you desire to ascend to these,
anima fia a ciò più di me degna: 122 you'll find a soul more fit to lead than I:
con lei ti lascerò nel mio partire; 123 I'll leave you in her care when I depart.
ché quello imperador che là sù regna, 124 'For the Emperor who has His seat on high
perch' i' fu' ribellante a la sua legge, 125 wills not, because I was a rebel to His law,
non vuol che 'n sua città per me si vegna. 126 that I should make my way into His city.
In tutte parti impera e quivi regge; 127 'In every part He reigns and there He rules.
quivi è la sua città e l'alto seggio: 128 There is His city and His lofty seat.
oh felice colui cu' ivi elegge!" 129 Happy the one whom He elects to be there!'
E io a lui: "Poeta, io ti richeggio 130 And I answered: 'Poet, I entreat you
per quello Dio che tu non conoscesti, 131 by the God you did not know,
a ciò ch'io fugga questo male e peggio, 132 so that I may escape this harm and worse,
che tu mi meni là dov' or dicesti, 133 'lead me to the realms you've just described
sì ch'io veggia la porta di san Pietro 134 that I may see Saint Peter's gate
e color cui tu fai cotanto mesti." 135 and those you tell me are so sorrowful.'
Allor si mosse, e io li tenni dietro. 136 Then he set out and I came on behind him.
