PROGETTO

“Ascoltiamo per poter interpretare il nostro mondo

e fare esperienza del significato” (Pauline Oliveros)

Giocando sull’assonanza tra “Two here” (due

progetto suggerisce come udire, e ancor me-
glio ascoltare, sia una forma di attenzione
verso l’altro. Il paradigma acustico va inte-
so qui come esperienza fisica ma anche co-
me metafora, invito all’attenzione, all’ascolto

DUE QUI / TO HEAR PROGETTO

ciste e musicisti (Caterina Barbieri, Gavin Bryars, Kali
Malone), scrittrici e scrittori (Nicoletta Costa, Tiziano
è strutturato su alcuni principi contrastanti a formare
(Pensive Bodhisattva on A Flat e A veces ya no puedo
sformata, invece, in uno spazio attraversabile in tempi

DUE QUI / TO HEAR PROGETTO

nell’infinito” (Byung-Chul Han).

colonna stessa. Un ventilatore muove l’aria all’interno

Come mol-

Anzi,
ambito elettronico e sperimentale: Caterina Barbieri
(1990, Italia) e Kali Malone (1994, Stati Uniti).
Reflection That Shines From One Mind Upon Another)].
dell’uomo nell’organo tradizionale. La musica è, in-
fatti, incisa su due rulli a motore come grandi carillon
che suonano all’unisono.

Chiamata in termini scientifici

Canada).
(1925-95, Argentina). In A veces ya no puedo moverme
uomo e ambiente, dell’uomo come ambiente.

Audience for a Tree (2024) è uno spazio temporaneo

(20 aprile 2024).

IF ONLY WE
HAD EARS
John Cage “Music is everywhere, if we only had ears”,
a partire dall’ascolto come relazione e comprensione

Luca Cerizza e Gaia Martino, conferenze, conversa-
zioni, performance musicali, con la partecipazione di
ospiti internazionali e italiani, saranno accompagnate

Come pratica sostanzialmente sociale e relazionale,

ESTERNI
Ballad for Ten Trees
Padiglione Italia – Biennale Arte 2024.

Per questo contesto Massimo Bartolini ha concepito

una nuova performance sonora (Ballad for Ten Trees)

blico all’interno del parco.

L’evento speciale Ballad for Ten Trees, in collaborazione

PROJECT

“We listen in order to interpret our world

and experience meaning” (Pauline Oliveros)

Playing on the homophones “two here” (in

Italian, due qui) and “to hear,” the title of this
project suggests how hearing—or better, lis-
tening—is a form of attention to others. The
acoustic paradigm should be seen here as a
physical experience, but also as a metaphor,
an invitation to pay attention, to listen to the
Other, be it a human being, a mechanical el-
ement, or a natural form. In Bartolini’s view,
art is a path to knowledge, and the project
suggests that “lending an ear” could become
a tool for self-improvement within the com-
munity of this world.

DUE QUI / TO HEAR PROJECT

Due qui / To Hear is also the fullest expression to

date of a collaborative approach that Bartolini fre-
quently employs, involving many different figures.
The skills and languages of music (Caterina Barbieri,
Gavin Bryars, Kali Malone), literature (Nicoletta Costa,
Tiziano Scarpa), and technical fields (engineers, organ
builders, artisans) have contributed to defining the
artistic and curatorial project in all of its complexity,
like a polyphonic composition for many voices.
Through sculptures, installations, sound works, and
performances, with a range that is characteristic of
the artist’s practice, it aims to create a context of ex-
perience. Visitors to the Italian Pavilion can use either
of two entrances—from the Tesa or from the garden—
and move through three areas built around different
forms of motion and stasis, acoustic experiences and
meeting points. All of the works respond to the phys-
ical characteristics of each exhibition space, without
adopting any form of display.
As is often the case in Bartolini’s practice, the proj-
ect is structured around certain opposite principles,
charting a potentially circular path. While at either
end we find large empty spaces filled with sounds of a
very different nature, the main space is almost entire-
ly occupied by a vast, labyrinthine installation that is
both tall and wide (Due qui, 2024). While the works at
either end allude to different forms of immobility and
apparent inaction (Pensive Bodhisattva on A Flat and
A veces ya no puedo moverme, both 2024), the larger
Tesa is instead transformed into a realm that visitors
can walk through at their own pace and in different
directions, as if encouraged to roam and investigate.
Along this two-way path, the Bodhisattva encountered

in the Tesa and the tree evoked in the garden respec-

tively embody a principle of spirituality and a principle
of nature. Despite their seeming inactivity, the tree
connected through its roots and the Bodhisattva sit-
ting in thought—like the opportunity to contemplate
the pulsation of a natural element at the center of
the main room (Conveyance, 2024)—represent what
may be deeper forms of interaction with the World.
Because “listening is a form of inactivity in which the
ego, the locus of distinctions and delimitations, falls
silent. The listening ego immerses itself in the totality,
in the unlimited, in the infinite.” (Byung-Chul Han).

Sitting on a long recumbent column is the small stat-

ue of a Pensive Bodhisattva, a traditional theme in
Buddhist art. The Bodhisattva is a person who, having
attained enlightenment, voluntarily gives it up in order
to show others how to get there. An embodiment of
inactivity, the Bodhisattva sits motionless, preferring
thought to action.
What looks like a line drawn through the space, a de-
marcation, actually functions as an organ pipe, with its
“mouth” at the other end of the column. A fan moves
the air inside, creating a low, steady drone. The sus-
pended state suggested by the Bodhisattva is under-
scored by this sustained sound, which evokes a cir-
cular kind of time.
The colors of the two long walls in this Tesa allude
to how, at different points in history going back at
least to Isaac Newton, various scientists and musi-
cians have assigned specific hues to musical keys. In
this case, green and purple are respectively A and A
flat, in keeping with the associations suggested by
composer Alexander Scriabin in 1911. A refers to the
key of the organ Bartolini presented at Centro Pecci
in Prato (2022-23), while A flat is the key of the work
heard in this room.

This is the largest example to date of a series of in-

stallations Bartolini has designed over the last few
years out of scaffolding pipes. Relying on the aid
of organ builders and technical experts, he modi-
fies them to sound like an organ. Like many other
projects by Bartolini, this immense mechanical cre-
ation works by transforming materials or presenting
them in completely new ways, to spark an almost a
Baroque sense of wonder. For that matter, according
to certain principles of Baroque aesthetics, grasping
variation (thauma) is a prerogative of intelligence,
and wonder springs from the juxtaposition of “dis-
tances,” according to the logic of paradox.
In this case, with a game of contrasts characteris-
tic of this artist, a setting associated with labor and
effort (the scaffolding) also becomes an engine of
spirituality, perhaps of betterment, through music
(the organ). The structure changes function: rather

than aiding in the construction of a building, it serves

to convey a sound, a musical “edifice.” Filling almost
the entire Tesa, this space has various entrances
and exits, and exists more as an experience than an
image.
The design of this walk-through structure follows
the layout of an imaginary Italian garden from the
Baroque era. The role that a fountain would normal-
ly play in such a garden is filled here by a circular
sculpture (Conveyance, 2024), which also serves as a
bench on which several people can gather. In point of
fact, this center—this meeting place—is the ideal spot
for listening, in stereo, to the composition written
specifically for this project by two young musicians
at the leading edge of experimental and electron-
ic music: Caterina Barbieri (b. 1990, Italy) and Kali
Malone (b. 1994, United States). Their joint contribu-
tion [Mute vette (A Reflection That Shines From One
Mind Upon Another)] is an antiphon in A-flat major
in which two melodic lines intersect and complete
each other. These two short melodies are played in
loop, with mechanical components standing in for the
human player of a traditional organ. The music is in-
scribed on two motorized rolls, like giant music boxes
that play in unison. Although the acoustic space has
been conceived with a true center, the sound of this
musical machine can nonetheless be heard in many
different ways depending on how, and at what pace,
the visitor walks through it. It is our own movement,
in part, that “composes” a constantly changing piece
of music.

Though it echoes the rigorous geometry of a minimalist

sculpture, the work is actually “animated” by a natural
element: a conical wave that constantly rises and falls.
This wave, for which the scientific term is “soliton,” is
similar to the kind that generates a tsunami, but here it
is constantly repeated as if in a laboratory experiment.
Its continual pulsation is a phenomenon that can be
observed in solitude or with others; transformed into
a hypnotic movement, it can also become a tool that
aids meditation. Conveyance is truly a beating heart, a
point of equilibrium, perhaps even pacification, with-
in this large, labyrinthine space. Though continually
moving, the wave is utterly silent, yet around it all is
sound.

Ringing out through the Giardino delle Vergini is a cho-

ral work for three voices, bell plates, and vibraphone,
composed by English musician Gavin Bryars (b. 1943,
United Kingdom) in collaboration with his son Yuri
Bryars (b. 1999, Canada). One of the most important
figures to emerge from the minimalist avant-garde of
the late 1960s, Gavin Bryars has worked with Bartolini
in the past for the artist’s major retrospective at Centro
Pecci in Prato (Hagoromo, 2022-23). Here, Bryars has
composed a new piece that draws inspiration from a
poem by Roberto Juarroz (1925-95, Argentina). In A
veces ya no puedo moverme (Sometimes I can no lon-
ger stir myself), a human being has the sense of be-
ing a tree, or some other form of plant life connected
to the world by its roots, in a form of osmosis: “as if
everything were born in me / or as if I were born in
everything.” An immobility that is also an interaction.
Three pairs of portable speakers have been hung from
the branches of three trees, like shoes dangling from
a wire to mark a meeting place; they play their sounds
in different parts of the garden, suggesting possible
relationships between humanity and the environment,
or humanity as environment.

Developing on several works of the 1990s-2000s in

which the artist partially buried himself or other peo-
ple for photos or performances, seeking an osmotic
relationship with nature, Audience for a Tree (2024)
creates a temporary space by “planting” a circle of
people around a tree in the garden. In a single act of
apparent inaction, they protect it while also contem-
plating it, becoming a guardian audience. Audience for
a Tree will appear only at certain times during the ex-
hibition, on the opening days and as part of the Public
Program, but will leave traces of itself around the tree
and in the ground.

ES A VECES YA NO PUEDO MOVERME.

HALLO RAÍCES MÍAS EN TODAS PARTES,

COMO SI TODAS LAS COSAS NACIERAN DE MÍ
O COMO SI YO NACIERA DE TODAS LAS COSAS.

SÓLO PUEDO ENTONCES QUEDARME QUIETO,

CON LOS OJOS ABIERTOS COMO DOS ROSTROS
A PUNTO DE NACER,
CON UN POCO DE AMOR EN UNA MANO
Y ALGO DE FRÍO EN LA OTRA.

Y A QUIEN PASA A MI LADO

TAN SÓLO PUEDO DARLE ESA AUSENCIA INMÓVIL
CON LA RAÍZ TAMBIÉN EN ÉL.

EN SOMETIMES I CAN NO LONGER STIR MYSELF.

I FIND MY ROOTS EVERYWHERE

AS IF EVERYTHING WERE BORN IN ME
OR AS IF I WERE BORN IN EVERYTHING.

THEN I CAN ONLY KEEP MYSELF STILL

WITH EYES OPEN LIKE TWO FACES
ABOUT TO BE BORN,
WITH A LITTLE LOVE IN ONE HAND
AND A BIT OF COLD IN THE OTHER.

AND I CAN ONLY GIVE

TO WHOEVER PASSES BY MY SIDE
THAT UNSTIRRING ABSENCE
WHICH ALSO HAS ITS ROOT IN HIM.

PUBLIC
PROGRAM

The exhibition Due qui / To Hear is accom-

panied by a Public Program, curated by
Luca Cerizza and promoted by Directorate-
General for Contemporary Creativity of the
Ministry of Culture. The Public Program fea-
turing various events inside and outside the
spaces of the Italian Pavilion. It is divided in-
to three sections, the first being the perfor-
mances held during the preview days and on
the official opening day (April 20, 2024). The
second is made up of initiatives closely re-
lated to the contents of the Italian Pavilion,
in a wide-ranging program investigating the
themes raised by Massimo Bartolini’s project
Due qui / To Hear, with events held on two
days in each of the four scheduled months.
Lastly, the third will include two special proj-
ects involving music and performance, to be
held outside of Venice.

PUBLIC PROGRAM 2024

IF ONLY WE
HAD EARS
Drawing inspiration from a famous quote by musician
and theorist John Cage, “Music is everywhere, if we
only had ears,” the Public Program*, curated by Luca
Cerizza in collaboration with Gaia Martino, will focus
on several key themes raised by the project of the
Italian Pavilion and by Massimo Bartolini’s practice.
The program will lend voices, words, and sounds to
the human, social, spiritual, and ecological perspec-
tive suggested by the exhibition project, starting with
the concept of listening as a relationship, a means of
understanding oneself and other human and non-hu-
man beings.

The Giardino delle Vergini* next to the Italian Pavilion

will house a varied series of initiatives, held on two
days (Friday and Saturday) of each of the four sched-
uled months.
Luca Cerizza and Gaia Martino will introduce and mod-
erate talks, conversations, and musical performances
featuring Italian and international guests. These will
be accompanied by workshops specifically conceived
for Visual Arts students from NABA, Nuova Accademia
di Belle Arti and IUAV University of Venice, the Italian
Pavilion’s key partners for education and research.

PUBLIC PROGRAM IF ONLY WE HAD EARS

THE POLITICS
 OF LISTENING
Listening Friday, May 17
in relation Saturday, May 18

As an essentially social, relational practice, listening

can become a form of activism deeply embedded in
everyday life, in public and private space. When the
figure of the listener is turned from a vague, abstract
concept into a person situated within a context of in-
teraction, the focus shifts from overarching narratives
to the many different micro-narratives that reverber-
ate from the multiple perspectives of other bodies.
Listening to difference.

TRUSTING THE
BACKGROUND
Listening Friday, June 14
with nature Saturday, June 15

Auditory experience is not an isolated system, but ex-

ists within complex ecosystems. Listening can there-
fore be thought of as a tool for understanding and
tending to the non-human world; this idea can be seen
in many works from throughout Bartolini’s career, in
which his own body or those of other performers seek
a form of osmosis with an organic element, the earth
and the land.

MEDITATION
IN-ACTION
Listening Friday, July 12
to oneself Saturday, July 13

Grasping the profoundly relational dynamics of sound

makes it possible to think of listening as a perpetually
generative experience: all the forces at work vibrate
with each other, coexist, and are in constant trans-
formation. When listening is turned inward, it is thus
a living phenomenon, and our spiritual existence is a
vibration that can shake up every concept of presence
and action.

PUBLIC PROGRAM IF ONLY WE HAD EARS

WHAT YOU DO
FOR ME
Listening Friday, September 13
to the machine Saturday, September 14

Massimo Bartolini’s work features a bevy of mechan-

ical parts and machines: sources of wonder, tools for
(re)discovering the world, spaces of sharing and ex-
perience. Some of these mechanisms produce sound
and music, as sculptures that “make noise.” And so the
experience of listening can also turn its attention on
machines, as a way of understanding the relationship
between humans and technology, the organic and the
mechanical.

OUTSIDE
EVENTS
Ballad for Ten Trees
On Sunday, May 12, a special event will be held in the
gardens of Villa Fürstenberg in Mestre, the exhibition
space of Italian Pavilion sponsor Banca Ifis. For this
setting, Massimo Bartolini has conceived a new sound
performance (Ballad for Ten Trees) that is an extension
and redefinition of the Ballad for a Tree project, one of
the artist’s most iconic works.

Ten solos, played by different saxophonists to ten dif-

ferent trees in the Villa Fürstenberg gardens, will cre-
ate an incredibly rich polyphonic effect that can be
experienced in an endless number of ways, depending
on how audience members choose to walk through the
park.

The special event Ballad for Ten Trees is presented

as part of the Public Program for the Italian Pavilion
at Biennale Arte 2024, promoted by the Directorate-
General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian
Ministry of Culture.

Further details and info on how to attend will be

posted in the Public Program section of the website

PUBLIC PROGRAM OUTSIDE EVENTS

Ballad for a Tree

For Due qui / To Hear, Bartolini has conceived a new
version of this work as an itinerant project that will
take place in various locations around Italy. A num-
ber of saxophonists, selected with the aid of musician
Edoardo Marraffa, who has worked with the artist on
many occasions, will play their music to different trees
in parks and gardens scattered across the country.

This project has grown out of a partnership with

WeStart, the Music Production Center of Eastern
Piedmont, in dialogue with local communities.

The series of special events Ballad for a Tree is present

ed as part of the Public Program for the Italian Pavilion
at Biennale Arte 2024.

An updated calendar of events will be posted on the

dedicated page of the website, [Link], in the
special events section of the Public Program.
