ITALIAN LANGUAGE COURSE – LEVEL 1 (A1–A2)
Alphabet & Pronunciation
Italian uses the Latin alphabet with 21 letters. The letters j, k, w, x, y only appear in foreign words.
It's a phonetic language, meaning it’s pronounced the way it’s written.
Pronunciation rules:
- C before e or i = “ch” (like cheese) → ciao
- Ch before e or i = “k” (like key) → chiaro
- G before e or i = “j” (like giraffe) → gelato
- Gh before e or i = hard “g” (like go) → ghetto
- Gn = like ñ in niño → lasagne
- Gl = like the lli in million → famiglia
Articles (Definite and Indefinite)
Definite Articles (the):
- il → il libro
- lo → lo studente
- l’ → l’amico
- la → la casa
- i → plural of il
- gli → plural of lo and l’
- le → plural of la and l’
Indefinite Articles (a/an):
- un → masculine (most cases)
- uno → masculine (before s+consonant, z, gn, ps)
- una → feminine
- un’ → feminine before vowels
Gender & Number Agreement
- Most nouns ending in -o are masculine, -a are feminine.
- Adjectives must match the gender and number of the noun.
Singular to Plural:
- -o → -i (masculine)
- -a → -e (feminine)
- -e → -i (both)
Nouns and Adjectives
- Adjectives usually follow the noun: una macchina rossa
- They agree in gender and number with the noun: bambina bella
Present Tense Verbs (Presente Indicativo)
Three conjugations: -are, -ere, -ire
Parlare (to speak):
- io parlo
- tu parli
- lui/lei parla
- noi parliamo
- voi parlate
- loro parlano
Credere (to believe):
- io credo
- tu credi
- lui/lei crede
- noi crediamo
- voi credete
- loro credono
Dormire (to sleep):
- io dormo
- tu dormi
- lui/lei dorme
- noi dormiamo
- voi dormite
- loro dormono
Irregular Verbs:
Essere (to be): sono, sei, è, siamo, siete, sono
Avere (to have): ho, hai, ha, abbiamo, avete, hanno
Fare (to do): faccio, fai, fa, facciamo, fate, fanno
Andare (to go): vado, vai, va, andiamo, andate, vanno
Sentence Structure

Examples:
- Io mangio la pizza.
- Lei studia l’italiano.
Questions & Negation
Questions:
- Parli inglese?
- Dove abiti?
- Che cosa fai?
Negation:
- Non capisco.
- Non ho soldi.
