Imperfetto

L’imperfetto is a past tense that is used for actions that were done in the past.
It is different from the passato prossimo because the actions lasted some time, or were repeated

I Pronomi Diretti

- I pronomi diretti answer to the question “who? / what?”, i.e. direct object

I eat the apple → I eat it → Io mangio la mela → io la mangio
- Sometimes (with infinitive and imperative) we can attach pronouns to verbs.
Example: lo voglio dire → voglio dirlo (I want to say it); dimmi (tell me)

L’imperativo

- L’imperativo is a mode used to give orders. It can come across as very strong (esp. tu e voi)
- The subject is often omitted, and if included (tu, canta!) it makes the order even stronger
- Third singular and plural are taken from congiuntivo (subjunctive)
- There is no first singular imperativo. To express it: devo + infinitive. Devo studiare!

Il Condizionale Presente

Il condizionale translates English “would”: I would sing → io canterei


It is used to introduce other sentences, such as “if” clauses: io canterei, se … → I would sing, if…
(followed by subjunctive)
There is also a condizionale passato: I would have sung → avrei cantato; I would have gone: sarei
andato. It is built with “avere/essere” (depending on the auxiliary of the verb, as seen in the class
about past participle) cond. pres. + past participle
