Un'altra ... un altro gioiello che ho riscoperto recentemente e la chiesa di Ognissanti: perche
la Chiesa d'Ognissanti, se i turisti ci passano, non sanno nemmeno che cos'e. E lì vicino ci
sono due grandi hotel. Quindi, immagino che i turisti ci passino. Ma quando io entro dentro
non c'e nessuno o ci sono forse i fiorentini o forse pochi turisti.

Another... another gem I recently rediscovered is the Church of Ognissanti. Because,

Ora, perche e importante la chiesa d'Ognissanti? Prima di tutto e una bella costruzione
molto antica, e poi perche ci sono seppelliti dei nomi di personaggi, anzi dei personaggi
famosissimi nella storia di Firenze e nella storia mondiale. Primo tra tutti, Sandro Botticelli,
quindi c'e la tomba della famiglia Botticelli e si pensa anche di Sandro.

Now, why is the Church of Ognissanti important? First of all, it’s a beautiful, very old
building. And also because some famous figures in the history of Florence—and world
history, really—are buried there. First among them: Sandro Botticelli. There’s the tomb
of the Botticelli family, and it’s believed that Sandro is buried there too.

Proprio lì vicino a lui, a questa tomba della famiglia Botticelli, Sandro Botticelli, grande
pittore del Rinascimento Fiorentino, proprio lì vicino c'e un'altra ... un altro sepolcro,
un'altra tomba che e quella della famiglia Vespucci. Chi e la famiglia Vespucci? Eh, ma si sa,
la famiglia di Amerigo Vespucci, colui che ha dato il nome all'America o che comunque,
insomma, ha fatto delle scoperte importanti nel nuovo mondo e che quindi ... per il quale
l'America si chiama America e, nella sua famiglia, imparentato con lui, non negli stessi anni,
ma insomma, forse sì, c'era pure Simonetta Vespucci.

Right next to that, to the Botticelli family tomb—Sandro Botticelli, the great painter of
the Florentine Renaissance—there’s another... another burial, another tomb, which is
the one belonging to the Vespucci family. Who are the Vespuccis? Well, come on,
everyone knows: the family of Amerigo Vespucci—the guy who gave his name to
America, or at least played a big role in the discoveries of the New World, and for
whom America is named after him. And in his family, related to him—not exactly in the
same years, but still, more or less—there was also Simonetta Vespucci.

E chi era Simonetta Vespucci? Era la musa di Sandro Botticelli. Cioe, Sandro Botticelli, ogni
volta che dipingeva, gli storici pensano ritraeva la bellissima Simonetta Vespucci che era
considerata la ragazza piu bella di Firenze, e infatti nei suoi dipinti principali, per esempio
La nascita di Venere o La Primavera si pensa che sia rappresentata proprio Simonetta.

And who was Simonetta Vespucci? She was Botticelli’s muse. I mean, Sandro Botticelli,
every time he painted, historians believe he was depicting the beautiful Simonetta
Vespucci, who was considered the most beautiful girl in Florence. And in his most
famous paintings—for example, The Birth of Venus or Primavera—it’s believed that
the figure is actually Simonetta.

E comunque nella chiesa d'Ognissanti non ci sono solo queste cose: ci sono tantissimi altri
capolavori: c'e, per esempio, un crocifisso di Giotto. Tutto questo e gratuito: entri nella
chiesa e vedi queste meraviglie. Ci sono opere del Ghirlandaio e così via, quindi la chiesa
d'Ognissanti, io ogni volta che vado a Firenze, ci passo e me la guardo un po'.

And anyway, the Church of Ognissanti doesn’t just have those things—there are a ton
of other masterpieces: there’s, for example, a crucifix by Giotto. And all of this is free:
you walk into the church and see these wonders. There are also works by Ghirlandaio,
and so on. So the Church of Ognissanti—every time I go to Florence, I stop by and take
a look.

Tra tante, c'e anche la chiesa di Santo Spirito e la piazza di Santo Spirito perche la piazza di
Santo Spirito e molto bellina, divertente. E nel quartiere che si chiama Oltrarno, cioe al di la
dell'Arno, dove ancora risiedono molti fiorentini, quindi e sempre carino andare a fare la
spesa in quel quartiere perche ci sono i negozietti, c'e appunto il forno, c'e l'ortolano, c'e il
macellaio, c'e la cartoleria, c'e la farmacia, e così via: tanti piccoli negozi dove si fa la spesa e
si chiacchiera, con un bell'accento fiorentino, con i commercianti che ti trattano sempre
bene, fanno le battute. Sai, noi toscani siamo sempre molto scherzosi, facciamo sempre
molte battute, e quindi ... ecco, quella e la cosa che mi piace.

Among many, there’s also the Church of Santo Spirito and the Piazza Santo Spirito. The
piazza is super cute, lively. It’s in the neighborhood called Oltrarno, meaning on the
other side of the Arno, where lots of Florentines still live. So it’s always nice to go
shopping in that neighborhood because there are little shops—there’s the bakery, the
produce guy, the butcher, the stationery store, the pharmacy, and so on. Lots of little
shops where you shop and chat, with that lovely Florentine accent, with shopkeepers
who are always friendly and cracking jokes. You know, we Tuscans love joking
around—we’re always making wisecracks—and that’s something I really enjoy.

La piazza e molto bella e la chiesa dell'architetto Brunelleschi e incredibile. Dentro, anche lì,
ci sono delle bellissime opere. Mi sembra che ci sia, se non mi sbaglio, un crocifisso di
Michelangelo, e poi ci sono bellissimi dipinti tra cui opere del Ghirlandaio, e così via.

The piazza is beautiful, and the church, designed by Brunelleschi, is incredible. Inside,
again, there are some amazing works. I think there’s—if I’m not mistaken—a crucifix
by Michelangelo, and there are gorgeous paintings, including works by Ghirlandaio,
and more.

E poi ci sono i mercati all'aperto in Piazza Santo Spirito: tutti i giorni, la mattina dalle nove
all'una, c'e un mercato con varie bancarelle che cambiano ogni giorno, dove si puo fare uno
shopping un po' rilassato, e c'e anche un fruttivendolo che vende frutta e verdura molto
buona.

And then there are the outdoor markets in Piazza Santo Spirito—every morning, from
nine to one, there’s a market with various stalls that change every day, so you can do
some relaxed shopping. There’s even a fruit and veggie vendor with really good
produce.

Beh, le piazze di Firenze sono tutte carine, sono tutte belle. Alcune, grandi, alcune piccole,
alcune affollate, alcune meno affollate. Io, pero, se devo pensare a una piazza, penso sempre
a quando da una stradina piccola arrivo a Piazza Pitti e mi si apre la visione della grandezza
della piazza e di Palazzo Pitti che ... dove appunto abitavano i Medici e poi i Lorena, e quindi
una ... una reggia bellissima con una piazza molto grande, molto spaziosa, chiusa al traffico
dove le persone si mettono a sedere, chiacchierano, si riposano, e da lì si entra ai Giardini di
Boboli e ... e anche ai musei proprio di Palazzo Pitti che sono molto, molto belli e
interessanti.

Well, all the piazzas in Florence are cute, they are all beautiful. Some big, some small,
some crowded, others less so. But for me, if I had to pick just one piazza, I always think
about that moment when you come out of a narrow little street and suddenly Piazza
Pitti opens up before you, and you get that full view of the massive square and Palazzo
Pitti—where the Medici used to live, and later the Lorraine family. So it’s like... a
stunning palace with a big, wide square that’s car-free, where people sit around, chat,
relax. And from there, you can enter the Boboli Gardens and also the museums inside
Palazzo Pitti, which are really, really beautiful and interesting.
