EXCHANGING CURRENCY

You can exchange foreign currency or cash traveler's checks at the follow-
ing places: the American embassy, American consulates, money exchange oftices,
banks, airports, train stations, some hotels, and some travel agencies.

. The best exchange rates are obtained at the embassy or the consulates, and
large cities usual/y ofter better rates than smal/ towns, since the former do a
relatively greater amount of business. Currency exchange rates are usual/y better
than exchange rates for traveler's checks because the latter normal/y include a
handling charge. Low exchange rates are normal in hotels and in the better-known
tourist resort areas.

Language - Usage Notes

1. The present tense may be used to express an immediate future idea.

Example: Cambio cento dollari. "1'11 change $100."

2. Vorrei is a special "/" form of volere. It is not a present indicative form but
rather a form of the present conditional. [See Appendix Al

3. This dialog gives you two other infinitive constructions:

a form ofvolere + infinitive (vorrei cambiare)

a form of potere + infinitive (possiamo andare)

4. Note the position of mi before dia. With some exceptions, mi precedes verb
forms.

5. As a ru/e, plura/s of nouns end in unstressed -i except for feminine singular

nouns that have a singu/ar form ending in unstressed -a. The latter end in
unstressed -e in the plural.

Thus: dollaro (sg.) dollari (p/.); lira (sg.) lire (pl.).

6. The word for IIthe definite artide has various forms. Theyare:

8. Words used to describe or qualify have forms that change according to their

An example of the former is quanto*: quanto, quanta, quanti, quante.

An example of the latter i5 quale: quale, quali.
