CULTURAL NOTES

HOTELS AND BOARDING HOUSES

Italian hotels are cal/ed alberghi, although when a name fol/ows, they may
a/so be ca/Jed hotel, as in Hotel Ambasciatori. Mote/s are cal/ed motel and are
usual/y found on highways.

Italian boarding houses are cal/ed pensioni. A pensione is general/y a

fami/y-run operation, usual/y smal/er than a hotel though sometimes just as
elegant. In a pensione it is possible to have room and board. Pensione completa
includes the room, continental breakfast, and two meals; mezza pensione includes
the room, continental breakfast, and one mea/. Not ali rooms have private baths.

The casa albergo or IIresidence" is a relatively new institution that provides

services similar to those of a hotel or boarding house. It offers small, comp/etely-
furnished apartments (1 to 3 bedrooms) with kitchen facilities. They can be rented
by the week or by the month. Cleaning, house linen, telephone service, and utility
services are provided by the management. The case albergo are general/y
comfortable, conveniently located, and rather expensive.

In hotels, boarding houses, and the Iike, personal identification is

requested at registration time.

1. The expression for "good morning may be written as one word or two, i.e.,
