Getting started with Go.
The first thing you need is a Go set! This page tells you how to make a miniature board and stones using card/paper
templates. This is cheaper than buying a proper Go set!
The 2nd, 3rd & 4th pages of this document are templates for miniature 19x19, 13x13 and 9x9 Go boards followed by a
complete set of stones on a plain white background. Stones get lost, so there are also some spares!
The final page is a mock-kaya 'wood-effect' paper. In Japan, the best Go boards are made of kaya wood or something
similar. Kaya is rare and very expensive. This is a cheaper alternative!
What should you do with this stuff? With a little care, using good quality materials, you can produce a very effective
Go set:
• Print a copy of page 4. I used 210 gsm card and my small ink-jet printer. Use heavier card if your printer will
accept it, say 250 gsm. For a better quality print, use a laser printer.
• Put the copy back in the printer, 'right way up'.
• Print a copy of page 2.
• You should now have a 'wooden' Go board.
• [Optionally photocopy the wood-effect page onto the 'back' of the board. You should now have a double-sided
'wooden' board.]
• Print a copy of pages 3 & 4 (the pieces).
• Score lightly along the line joining the 'top' and 'bottom' of the stones, and fold carefully, so that the top and
bottom of the stones register correctly. Carefully stick the folded strips together 'back-to-back' using double-
sided adhesive tape. Try to avoid 'air bubbles'.
• Carefully cut out the stones with sharp scissors – cut them 'square' – it's far too fiddly trying to cut out 361
separate circles!
• Result – a cheap, usable miniature Go set.
If your printer won't accept card, you can use paper (90 gsm is OK, but 120 gsm is better.) but beware – if you do use
paper, and choose to use glue to stick things together, the glue may 'bleed' through the paper and cause the ink to run.
If you do use glue, you may need to experiment – I used PVA craft glue. Place things under a heavy weight, to keep them flat till
dry.
