What is procedure text?

• Procedure text is a text that explains, informs, or helps the reader on
how to make or use something.
• Definisi procedure text adalah teks yang memberikan instruksi,
menginformasikan, atau membantu pembaca tentang bagaimana cara
untuk membuat atau melakukan sesuatu.
• Biasanya, jenis teks ini diawali dengan frasa “How
to…”, misalnya “How to make a cup of tea” atau “How to operate an
oven”. Procedure text banyak terdapat di buku resep masakan dan
buku petunjuk (manual book).
The purpose of procedure text
• The purpose of procedure text is to show how something is
made/used/done through sequence of steps.
• Tujuan procedure text adalah untuk menjelaskan bagaimana sesuatu
dibuat, dilakukan atau digunakan melalui langkah-langkah yang
berurutan.
• Procedure text digunakan untuk menguraikan satu per satu
bagaimana sesuatu dapat dibuat atau dicapai. Melalui procedure text,
pembaca akan lebih mudah dalam memahami dan membaca
petunjuk cara melakukan sesuatu dengan urutan yang benar.
Generic Structure
Aim/Goal atau Tujuan
Di dalam teks prosedur bahasa Inggris, terdapat bagian aim/goal yang
berarti tujuan pelaksanaan dari apa yang akan disampaikan dalam teks.
Biasanya, tujuan yang ada pada teks merupakan judul dari teks
tersebut. Misalnya:
“How to Cook Fried Rice”
Ingredients/Materials atau Alat/Bahan
Setelah tujuan, akan ada bagian ingredients/materials yang berarti
alat/bahan yang akan diperlukan dalam membuat sesuatu yang ada
dalam teks prosedur dalam bahasa Inggris tersebut. Misalnya seperti:
Ingredients:
• 1 plate of rice
• 1 egg
• A pinch of salt and pepper
• 1 tablespoon of oil, sweet soy sauce and sambal (optional)
• 1 sausage
Steps/Methods atau Langkah-langkah
Bagian steps/methods adalah bagian yang berisi langkah-langkah yang
harus kita lakukan untuk membuat sesuatu sesuai teks prosedur. Pada
bagian ini, langkah-langkahnya akan ditulis secara spesifik dan
berurutan. Agar membantu pembaca dapat mengikuti instruksi dengan
baik. Contohnya:
• First, heat up the pan with vegetable oil. After the pan is hot enough,
not too hot, crack the egg, and scramble it.
• Then...
• Etc..
Language Feature
1. Menggunakan Simple Present Tense
• Procedure text harus ditulis dengan menggunakan Simple Present Tense.
Hal ini dikarenakan dalam procedure text terdapat kalimat-kalimat
perintah mengenai cara membuat atau melakukan sesuatu.
• Contoh: You can substitute vegetable oil with other oil or butter.
2. Menggunakan Kalimat Perintah (Imperative Sentences)
• Mayoritas isi teks ini merupakan instruksi, maka akan
ditemukan imperative sentence yang dalam kalimatnya diawali
oleh verb atau kata kerja.
• Imperative sentence selalu diawali oleh verb 1 dari action verb atau kata
kerja yang melibatkan aktivitas fisik. Tidak perlu memakai subject di awal
kalimatnya.
• Contoh: Add 3 onions and mix it well. Kalimat ini diawali oleh verb 1,
3. Menggunakan connectives atau kata penghubung
• Langkah-langkah atau instruksi yang ada pada teks prosedur dalam bahasa
Inggris disusun secara berurutan, sehingga dari langkah satu ke langkah
selanjutnya menggunakan connectives atau kata hubung.
• Contoh: Firstly, secondly, then, after that, dan finally.
4. MenggunakanKata Keterangan (Adverb)
Dalam teks prosedur akan ada adverb
Ada 2 jenis kata keterangan atau adverbs yang digunakan dalam procedure
text, yaitu:
Adverb of time atau kata keterangan waktu yang menandakan berapa lama kita
harus melakukan sesuatu. Contoh: in 10 minutes, for 1 hour.
Adverb of manner atau keterangan cara bagaimana melakukan sesuatu.
Contoh: slowly, well, evenly.
• Slice the scallions evenly and add them to the rice.
• Stir again slowly.
Characteristics of Procedure
Text
1. Have the destination text as the title
2. In general, steps or methods are bulleted or numbered to indicate
sequential instructions
3. Instructions are arranged systematically and in detail. In addition to
orders, sometimes there are prohibitions and conditions in addition
to instructions.

1. Simple Present Tense
• You can add various ingredients to the egg mix such as onion, mushroom,
vegetable, smoked beef, cheese, etc., to create different taste.

2. Connectives

3. Imperatives
