Jenis Conjunction
Coordinating Conjunctions
Coordinating conjunctions adalah kata sambung setara, yang digunakan
untuk menggabungkan kata, frasa dan klausa yang satu dengan yang lainnya. Jadi misalnya,
kamu bisa menggabungkan antara:
word + word atau kata + kata
phrase + phrase atau frasa + frasa
independent clause + independent clause atau klausa independen + klausa
independen
Kamu bisa menyebut coordinating conjunctions juga sebagai coordinator. Beberapa
konjungsi yang umum digunakan dalam tipe ini antara lain, for (untuk), and (dan), nor (atau
tidak), but (tapi), or (atau), yet (tetapi), so (juga).
Supaya tidak lupa, kamu bisa mengingatnya dengan membuat singkatan, FANBOYS
(For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So). Berikut contoh kalimatnya:
She opened the door and the window. (menggabungkan dua kata)
Would you like some pizza or pasta? (menggabungkan dua kata)
Do they prefer playing baseball or playing soccer? (menggabungkan dua frasa)
You can find ducks in the fish pool or in the park. (menggabungkan dua frasa)
He studied all night but he failed the test. (menggabungkan dua klausa)
She woke up early yet she missed the class. (menggabungkan dua klausa)
Subordinating Conjunctions
Subordinating conjunction adalah kata hubung yang digunakan
untuk membuat kalimat kompleks bahasa Inggris atau complex
sentence.
Berikut contoh penggunaan subordinating conjunction di dalam kalimat:
You may leave the class after the bell rings.
They will lose if they don’t practice.
We go to the beach before we eat at the restaurant.
Although he got the dream job, he was still unhappy.
Because he got sick, he didn’t go to school today.
Until I was 20 years old, I still lived with my parents.
Terdapat beberapa subordinating conjunctions yang umum digunakan,
yaitu although, even though, though, while, whereas, if, until, whether,
after, before, because, since, as, when, where, how, dan than.
Correlative Conjunctions
Correlative conjunction adalah kata penghubung yang berpasangan. Fungsi dari konjungsi ini
adalah untuk menjadi penghubung antar kata, frasa dan klausa yang memiliki hubungan
timbal balik atau saling melengkapi.
Konjungsi yang paling sering ditemukan atau bisa kamu gunakan adalah sebagai berikut:
Either … or
Neither … nor
Whether .. or
Both … and
Not only … but also
As … as
Such .. that
Rather .. than
Berikut adalah contoh-contoh kalimat menggunakan correlative conjunctions:
He will sell either his car or his house.
Adam neither likes apples nor oranges.
You will have to take vaccines whether you like it or not.
Both Man of Steel and Batman V Superman are my least favorite DC movies.
She is interested not only in maths but also in chemistry.
We are as lazy as them.
Lisa played violin with such passion that all of the audience were moved to tears.
She would rather sweep the floor than mop it.
