Definition of Procedure Text
There are three definition about procedure text : (1) Texts that explain how something works or how
to use instruction / operation manuals, e.g. how to use the video, the computer, the tape recorder,
the photocopier, the fax. (2) Texts that instruct how to do a particular activity, e.g. recipes, rules for
games, science experiments, road safety rules. (3) Texts that deal with human behavior, e.g. how to
live happily, how to succeed
Generic Structure of Procedure Text
1. Goal : (e.g. : How to make spaghetti)
2. Material or Ingredient: (e.g. : the material to cook omelette are egg, onion, vegetable oil, etc.
3. Step: (e.g.: first, wash the tomatoes, onion, …., second cut the onions becomes slice ….)
Purpose of Procedure Text
– To explain / tell (the reader) how to make / operate / do something through a sequence of actions
or steps.
– To explain steps / instruction to make / operate / do something
Language Feature of Procedure Text
– Use adverbial of sequence / Using temporal conjunction (e.g. : first, second, third, the last)
– Use command / imperative sentence (e.g. : put the noodles on the …., cut the onion …, wash the
tomatoes ….,)
– Using adverbials (Adverbs) to express detail the time, place, manner accurate, for example, for
five minutes, 2 hours, etc.
– Using action verbs, e.g. : make, take, boil, cook
– Using Simple Present Tense
Generic Structure Of Procedure Text
Aims/Goal (Tujuan)
Tujuan teks prosedur akan terdapat dari judulnya. Misalnya, untuk menjelaskan cara membuat
jus mangga, tujuanya akan ditulis menjadi judul itu sendiri, contohnya "how to make a mango
juice".
Ingredients/Materials (Bahan - Bahan/ Alat)
Hal-hal bisa berupa bahan-bahan atau alat yang dibutuhkan dalam membuat sesuatu.
Misalnya, untul membuat jus mangga, bahan yang dibutuhkan adalah buah mangga, air, dan
lain sebagainya.
Steps (Langkah-langkah)
Berisikan langkah atau tahapan dalam membuat, melakukan, atau mengoperasikan sesuatu.
Bagian ini biasanya ditulis secara berurutan (kronologis), dimulai dari langkah awal hingga
proses terakhir sampai akhirnya tujuan dari teks prosedur tersebut tercapai.
Language Feature (Ciri Kebahasaan Procedure Text)

karya Yuniarti, [Link]., [Link], ciri kebahasaan dari procedure text:
Ditulis dengan menggunakan Simple Present Tense, karena isi kalimatnya berupa fakta terkait
cara pembuatan atau pemakaian sesuatu.
Menggunakan imperative sentences (kalimat perintah). Contoh: cut the mango, chop the garlic,
pour the water, dan lain-lain.
Menggunakan conjunctive/connectives words (kata penghubung) untuk menghubungkan antara
satu kegiatan dengan kegiatan berikutnya. Contoh: firstly, secondly, then, after that, last, finally
dan lain-lain.
Menggunakan adverb (kata keterangan) untuk memberikan keterangan waktu Contoh: for 3
minutes, one hour, until, dan untuk memberikan keterangan cara, seperti thoroughly, well, fast,
dan lain - lain.
