HOPE AND WISH
I. Hope and wish are used when someone expresses a wish.
The difference between hope and wish:
Hope function for an expectation that may occur or be realistic
Wish to express expectations that are not or less likely to occur
II. Cara membuat kalimat hope:
1. Hope diikuti simple present tense,
Rumus simple present tense adalah S + Verb (s/es) + Complement
Contohnya: we hope he gets better soon
2. Hope Diikuti dengan to + Infinitive.
Infinitive adalah bentuk dasar dari sebuah kata kerja (verb). Format infinitive adalah to +
verb 1. Umumnya, infinitive digunakan untuk mengungkapkan tujuan dari seseorang.
Contonya: I hope he will keep his promise
3. Hope dengan Will + Base Verb
Base verb adalah bentuk kata kerja asli, atau biasa disebut juga dengan root verb.
Sebenarnya ini hampir sama dengan infinitive, bedanya format base verb tidak
menggunakan awalan “to”.
Contohnya: I hope Fatimah will finish his homework
4. Kalimat Hope + That Clause
dalam kalimat ini terdapat kata “that” yang berperan untuk menghubungkan dua klausa.
Contoh kalimat dengan kata “hope” diikuti that clause: I hope that everyone will be able
to come to the party.
5. Bentuk Kata Hope dalam Continuous Tense
For your information, sebagai verb, tentu “hope” bisa juga diubah ke dalam bentuk
continuous tense, atau familiar juga dengan sebutan progressive tense. Yap, jika diubah
dalam bentuk continuous, maka dari “hope” akan berubah menjadi “hoping”. Lihat
contoh di bawah ini:
I am hoping to pass my driving test this time.
bedanya “hope” dengan “hoping”?
Jadi, kalau “hope” bersifat lebih umum. Sementara itu, penambahan -ing di akhir kata
mengindikasikan bahwa kamu benar benar berharap terhadap suatu hal. Selain itu,
“hoping” juga menunjukkan suatu harapan yang ingin terwujud dalam waktu dekat.
Misal:
I’m hoping we win the game tonight.
Cara membuat kalimat wish:
1. Penggunaan Wish + To-Infinitive
kalimat ini untuk mengungkapkan suatu keinginan. Contoh kalimatnya:
I wish to write a novel. (Saya ingin menulis novel.)
2. Wish + Past Tense
keinginan di masa sekarang (present), maka kamu bisa mengungkapkan wish yang
disertai dengan past tense. contoh kalimatnya:
I wish I had a bigger salary. (But I don’t.)
(Saya berharap dapat memiliki gaji yang lebih besar). (Kenyataannya saya masih
memiliki gaji kecil.)
3. 3. Penggunaan Wish + Would
format kalimat berandai-andai tentang sesuatu yang akan terjadi di masa setelah
sekarang. Contohnya:
I wish you would stop smoking. (I’ll be happy if you stop smoking.)
(Saya berharap kamu akan berhenti merokok. (Saya akan senang jika kamu berhenti
merokok.)
4. Membuat Kalimat dengan Kata Wish + Past Perfect
menyesal setelah melakukan sesuatu di masa lalu dengan pola kalimat wish + past
perfect. Contohnya:
I wish I had been a better employee. (But I wasn’t)
(Saya harap saya bisa jadi pegawai yang lebih baik.) (Tetapi saya tidak.)
