What Are Articles?
a, an & the adalah kata sandang yang digunakan untuk membatasi pengertian dari kata benda
(Noun). Article juga adalah kata sandang yang digunakan untuk memodifikasi kata benda, orang, tempat, atau ide
atau sebuah gagasan.

Indefinite Article digunakan ketika kita ingin menunjukkan sesuatu yang belum jelas atau belum
ditentukan. Kita menggunakannya ketika kita tidak tahu pasti benda mana yang sedang kita [Link] benda
yang disandingkan dengan article “a” atau “an” merupakan kata benda tunggal yang tidak spesifik.
Aturan penggunaan indefinite article (a/an) adalah sebagai berikut:
*Ketika kita menyebut noun (kata benda) untuk pertama kalinya;Si pembicara dan si pendengar belum mengetahui
kata benda yang dimaksud.
Contoh: I bought a book [Link] book is expensive.
*Digunakan untuk “singular noun” dan hanya untuk benda yang bisa dihitung(countable noun).
Contoh:1) I eat a cake.
2) I have an apple.
3)We have a pen.
4)This is a ruler.
* Digunakan untuk menyebutkan jabatan, atau pekerjaan seseorang.
Contoh: 1)He is a teacher.
2)Raisa is a singer.
* Digunakan di depan nama kebangsaan seseorang(dalam bentuk singular).
Contoh:1)Peter is an American.
2)Sarah is an Indonesian.
* Digunakan di depan nama agama(dalam bentuk singular).
Contoh:1)I am a Christian.
2)She is a Moslem.
* Digunakan dalam penulisan jumlah tertentu.
Contoh:1) a glass of water..
2) a piece of paper.
3) a cup of coffee.
*Kita menggunakan article “a” apabila noun/kata benda diawali dengan consonant sound(bunyi konsonan).
Contoh:1) a university
2) a car
*Kita menggunakan article “an” apabila noun/kata benda diawali dengan vowel sound(bunyi vokal : aiueo).
Contoh:1) an hour
2) an apple
3) an actor
4) an egg

DEFINITE ARTICLE digunakan untuk menunjukkan kata benda (Noun), baik dalam bentuk tunggal atau jamak
yang spesifik. Definite Article ini menunjukkan benda, orang, tempat atau ide atau gagasan yang sudah jelas benda
atau orangnya yang dimaksud. Contoh: Palu Merah. Berarti palu yang dimaksud adalah palu yang berwarna merah
bukan palu yang warna lain. Article ini diletakkan sebelum kata benda, atau sebelum kata sifat yang langsung
memodifikasi kata benda.
Contoh:
Please give me the hammer. tolong berikan palu itu kepada ku
Please give me the red hammer; the blue one is too small. tolong berikan kepada ku palu merah
itu, palu yang biru terlalu kecil.
Please give me the nail. tolong berikan kepada ku paku itu.
Please give me the hammer and the nail. tolong berikan paku dan palu itu kepada ku.
Aturan penggunaan definite article (the) adalah sebagai berikut:
*Menyebut noun yang sama untuk kedua kalinya; Digunakan untuk kata benda yang telah disebut pada kalimat
sebelumnya.
Contoh:1) She’s got a bicycle. The bicycle is red.
2) I have a book. The book is very interesting.
3) I have a cat. The cat is very cute.
*Menyebut noun yang mana si pembicara dan si pendengar sudah mengetahui kata benda yang dimaksud.
Contoh:1) a. I stay in the hotel.
b. I stay in a hotel.
* Digunakan untuk menunjukan kitab suci, tempat, laut atau wilayah.
Contoh:1) The Jeju Island
2) The Bible
3) The Kahayan River;The Kahayan Bridge
4)The Toba Lake
5)The Tangkiling Hill
6) The Merapi Mountain
7) The Atlantic Ocean
* Digunakan untuk kata yang menunjukkan Suku,Bangsa, Agama atau orang secara kolektif.
Contoh: 1) The Javanese
2) The Dayaknese
3) The Indonesian
4) The Christian
5)The Moslem
* Digunakan dalam bentuk superlative (perbandingan) dan ordinal numbers (first,second,third,etc)
Contoh: 1) Hanna is the smartest student in the class.
2) Dika got the first rank in the racing tournament last month.
* Digunakan untuk nama keluarga dalam bentuk jamak yang berarti family.
Contoh: 1) The Cullen
2) The William
* Digunakan untuk nama benda yang hanya satu-satunya.
Contoh: 1) The Sun
2) The Moon
3) The Earth
*Untuk penulisan sekolah,universitas.
