Religion provides strength to endure life’s hardships by serving as a source of hope and resilience. It motivates individuals to persevere through difficult times by offering assurance of divine support and the prospect of spiritual rewards. Faith acts as an impetus, enabling believers to confront adversities with fortitude, while safeguarding them against despair and hopelessness. Thus, religion functions as a protective fortress against the challenging vicissitudes of life by instilling a sense of purpose and confidence in divine justice and assistance .
Religion, particularly Islam, promotes the pursuit of knowledge and scientific advancement by aligning spiritual and intellectual growth. The Quran encourages learning as a form of worship and seeks to inspire believers to explore the world and comprehend the divine workings within it. Such religious encouragement has historically driven scientific endeavors, as faith in divine order and purpose propels inquiries into the natural world. Consequently, religion creates a framework wherein scientific exploration is not opposed to faith but complementary, fostering progress and harmony .
In Islam, true happiness is perceived as being attainable in the afterlife rather than in this world. According to Islamic teachings, the happiness associated with this world is considered temporary and illusory, as it is often marred by the potential for sorrow, pain, and loss. Real contentment and peace can only be achieved by adhering to Islamic values and practices. This notion is supported by the Quranic verse in Al-Qashash, which advises believers to seek happiness in the afterlife while also enjoying worldly pleasures without causing harm. Thus, while worldly possessions and status might temporarily bring joy, true and lasting happiness is found through spiritual and religious fulfillment in the afterlife .
Religion plays a crucial role in instilling moral values by reinforcing noble characteristics such as justice, honesty, tolerance, and cooperation. Islam emphasizes that moral virtues become integral to one's faith, thereby binding followers morally and ethically. Without religion, these virtues risk being reduced to mere advice lacking in firm commitment. Abul Qosim Al-Khu’i argues that religion is vital in preserving the meaningfulness of moral values, preventing them from becoming unbinding suggestions .
The Quran describes human creation through a detailed process starting from the mingling of sperm and ovum, leading to fertilization, forming a zygote that settles in the womb. It then develops into a 'alaqah (a leech-like structure), followed by a 'mudghah' (chewed-like lump), before becoming bones clothed with flesh. Modern science parallels these stages, describing human development from conception, embryo-to-fetus transition, and eventual birth. This alignment between the Quranic descriptions and biological sciences underscores the intricacy and accuracy of the Quranic narrative from a period when such scientific understanding was absent .
Islam suggests several ways to achieve true happiness, which include having faith and performing good deeds, constantly remembering Allah through zikr, relying on Allah and having trust in Him, doing good to others sincerely for Allah’s sake, engaging in beneficial knowledge, focusing on current tasks while asking for Allah's help without excessive worry about the future or dwelling on past failures, remembering Allah's blessings, and doing for others without expecting their gratitude, instead seeking reward from Allah .
The primary arguments for the necessity of religion in human life include its role in upholding moral values, providing strength and hope during hardships, offering a comprehensive guide for living, and promoting scientific and intellectual progress. Religion is presented as essential for instilling and maintaining moral virtues, equipping individuals with the resilience needed to face life's challenges, and providing a stable foundation for understanding and interpreting life's complexities. Additionally, the encouragement of knowledge and acceptance of scientific progress are rooted in the religious tradition, making it indispensable for overall human development .
The concept of Tauhid in Islam addresses misconceptions about divinity and worship by strictly asserting the oneness and uniqueness of Allah in three aspects: Rububiyah, Uluhiyah, and Asma wa Sifat. Through Tauhid Rububiyah, Islam clarifies that only Allah has the power of creation and sustenance, dismissing myths about other beings having divine attributes. With Tauhid Uluhiyah, it negates any form of idolatry or the worship of other entities, emphasizing that all acts of worship are due solely to Allah. Tauhid Asma wa Sifat purifies the understanding of divine attributes, maintaining that the names and traits of Allah in the Quran are absolute and not comparable to human qualities. This comprehensive view corrects any polytheistic or anthropomorphic misconceptions about God and worship .
Islam is considered the only true model of religion because of the emphasis on Tauhidullah, or the belief in the oneness of God. This is divided into three parts: (1) Tauhid Rububiyah pertains to recognizing Allah’s sole divinity in His actions such as creation and governance of the universe, (2) Tauhid Uluhiyah involves dedicating all acts of worship to Allah alone, and (3) Tauhid Asma wa Sifat involves belief in the unique characteristics and names of Allah as stated in the Quran and Hadith. Tauhidullah underpins Islamic faith, and acknowledging any deficiency or misattribution in these dimensions compromises one’s adherence to true Islam .
Islam advocates for a balanced approach to worldly life and spiritual pursuits as outlined in Al-Quran. The guidance is not to forsake worldly pleasures but to seek them in alignment with spiritual obligations. This is evidenced by the Quranic exhortation to strive for the afterlife while enjoying permissible worldly benefits without creating harm or corruption. The integration of worldly experiences with a focus on spiritual growth is vital for holistic well-being, promoting both individual contentment and social harmony .
