        Pengertian Narrative Text( DEFINITION OF NARATIVE TEXT)

Narrative atau dalam Bahasa Indonesia disebut ‘narasi’ merupakan kata yang mempunyai
arti ‘a series of events’ atau ‘serangkaian peristiwa’. Sedangkan text atau ‘teks’ memiliki arti
tulisan.
So, Narrative Text is a text or story of a series of connected events, presented in a
sequence of written / spoken words, and/or in a sequence of (moving) pictures.
Teks narasi (Narrative Text) merupakan sebuah teks atau cerita mengenai serangkaian
peristiwa yang saling berhubungan, yang disajikan secara berurutan dari awal ke akhir cerita
baik secara lisan atau tulisan, dan/atau dengan gambar (bergerak) yang juga disajikan secara
berurutan (kronologis).

B.        Tujuan Narrative Text (PURPOSE OF NARATIVE TEXT)

Tujuan dasar dari text narasi adalah untuk menghibur dan menarik minat pembaca
dengan meyajikan cerita atau peristiwa yang memiliki masalah yang menimbulkan konflik dan
pada akhir cerita ada resolusinya atau akhir yang bahagia atau bahkan menyedihkan.
Sebenarnya teks narrative tidak hanya terbatas pada cerita yang berbau mistis, fiksi, legenda,
dongeng ataupun fable saja, tapi cerita lain yang berbentuk petualangan, misteri dan semua
bentuk cerita. Intinya, narrative text adalah tentang cerita. Tapi dalam pelajaran di sekolah, teks
yang bergenre naratif biasanya hanya digunakan untuk menunjukkan cerita fiksi seperti
dongeng ataupun legenda saja.
Jika dilihat dari jenisnya, maka narrative text yang sering dimaksudkan oleh bapak ibu
guru adalah termasuk kategori Narasi Sugestif, yaitu teks yang tujuannya agar pembaca
mendapatkan hikmah dari sebuah cerita.

C.        Generic Structure OfNarative Text

1.      Orientation : It is about the opening paragraph where the characters of the story are
introduced.
(berisi pengenalan tokoh, tempat dan waktu terjadinya cerita (siapa atau apa, kapan dan
dimana)
 2.      Complication : Where the problems in the story developed.
(Permasalahan muncul / mulai terjadi dan berkembang)
3.      Resolution : Where the problems in the story is solved.
(Masalah selesai, secara baik “happy ending” ataupun buruk “bad ending”)
4.      Reorientation :  Closing phrases that indicate the ending of the story
(ungkapan – ungkapan penutup yang menunjukan berakhirnya suatu cerita. Re-
orientation bersifat opsional atau tidak selalu ada pada narrative text)
5.      Coda : changes that occur in the characters and lessons / moral values that can be learned
from the story.
(perubahan yang terjadi pada tokoh dan pelajaran/ nilai moral yang bisa dipetik dari
cerita. Coda juga bersifat opsional)

Kadangkala susunan (generic structure) narrative text bisa berisi: Orientation,

Complication, Evaluation, Resolution dan Reorientation. Meski “Evaluation” dan
“Reorientation” merupakan optional; bisa ditambahkan dan bisa tidak. Evaluation berisi
penilaian/evaluasi terhadap jalannya cerita atau konflik. Sedangkan Reorientation berisi
penyimpulan isi akhir cerita.

D.        Generic Features
Pada umumnya, narrative text memiliki unsur kebahasaan sebagai berikut:
1.      Past tense: narrative text menggunakan kata kerja bentuk lampau (verb 2),
misalnya went, ate, met, dan lain-lain.
2.      Time conjungtion:menggunakanwaktulampauseperti once upon a time, one day,etc)
3.      Time connective: merupakan kata penghubung waktu untuk mengurutkan kejadian,
misalnya after, before, after that, danlainnya.
4.      Action verbs: kata kerja yang menunjukan peristiwa atau kegiatan, misalnya stayed,
climbed, wrote, dan lain-lain.
5.      Noun: pada umumnya kata benda (noun) digunakan sebagai kata ganti orang hewan, atau
benda dalam cerita, misalnya stepmother, the dwarfs, carriage, dan lain-lain.
6.      Saying and thinking verb: kata kerja yang menunjukan pelaporan atau ujaran,
misalnya said, told, thought, dan lain sebagainya.
