Aktivitas Pembelajaran 2: WRITING A CAPTION
A. The Language Features
1. Exclamation
An exclamatory sentence makes a statement that conveys strong emotion or
excitement. It ends with an exclamation mark (!)
For example: We won!
What a day! What a happy ending!
How slow they crawl!
2. Question
A question is a sentence that asks you something. A question requires an answer. It
begins with a question word (what, who, where, when, why, which, how) and ends with
a question mark (?).
3. Noun Phrase
Noun phrases are simply nouns with modifiers. Noun phrases are important for adding
more detail to a noun.
The modifier can come before or after the noun. If it comes before the noun, it's likely
to be an article, possessive noun, possessive pronoun, adjective, or participle.
his toy
the book
dull chisel
new table
Modifiers that come after the noun include prepositional phrases, adjective clauses,
participle phrases, and infinitives.
lawyer with a crooked nose
face red with embarrassment
devil in disguise
man of his word
4. Prepositional Phrase
Every prepositional phrase is a series of words consisting of a preposition and its object.
In the example above, “with” is the preposition and “reusable tote” is the object. In a
prepositional phrase, the object may be a noun, pronoun, gerund, or clause. A
prepositional phrase can function as an adjective or adverb.
According to the weather forecast
Across many deserts
After many tries
Amid the confusion
Around the world
The book with the tattered cover has been read many times.
The present inside the big box is mine.
B. Rule of Writing a caption
1. Supply specific information (Answering 5W1H Question)
Who is that? (And, in most cases, identify people from left to right unless the
action in the photograph demands otherwise.)
Why is this picture in the paper?
What's going on?
When and where was this?
Why does he/she/it/they look that way?
How did this occur?
2. Use present tense on the first sentence
3. Caption are written in complete sentences
4. Clearly identify the people and location in the photo
5. Identify the person from left to right
Task 6: Identify noun phrases and prepositional phrases in the following sentences.
1. He stood on the beach and watched the ship beyond the dock slowly maneuver itself
past the markers and into the slip.
2. The people from the nearest town brought donations throughout the year for the
victims of the hurricane.
3. Within two minutes, all of the trumpeters had laid their horns beneath their chairs on
the stage.
4. She positioned the needle over the skin above the cut and then plunged it into each side
of the gash with small, even strokes.
5. Upon their arrival, the visitors were greeted at the door by Martin, who had a sly grin
on his face.
Noun Phrases Prepositional phrases
TIPS TO WRITE CAPTIONS
Do not begin with the words a, an, or the.
Use present tense to describe action in a photo.
Give readers information they cannot get from just looking at the photo.
Write captions so they go from specific to general or general to specific.
When identifying members of a group, write “from left,” not “from left to right.”
“Above” and “pictured here” are unnecessary.
Captions should not repeat information contained in the lead.
Do not begin a caption with names. Name people only if they are important to the picture.
Try not to start every caption in the same way. Be creative! Use a prepositional phrase
(“During the state soccer tournament”) and -ing words (“Kicking in for the last few yards”),
or other techniques.
Give the reader a lot of information in the caption. Use two or three sentences, if possible.
Using quotes in a caption adds a personal voice.
Always include a photo credit. (“Photo by…”)
Task 7: Look at the pictures below. Write the caption under each picture.

Cek Kemampuan
Answer the following questions!
1. What is the function of a caption text?
2. What information do we need to include in a caption text?
3. What do you think about this photo caption? Analyze its structure!
4. Using a collection of old file photos, write captions for the pictures (five different pictures).
Dikumpulkan pada link Tugas Mandiri di classroom.
NOTE: You will probably not have names readily available for old file photos, so you can invent
them. However, making up information for regular publications work is an absolute NO-NO!
If old file photos are not available, clip photos from newspapers and magazines, removing the
caption and photo credit.
