MODAL AUXILIARY
• modal is a form of the word that helps verbs.
Modal must be juxtaposed with verbs.
Therefore, modal is also often called a
pronoun.
(modal adalah bentuk kata yang membantu
kata kerja. Modal harus disandingkan dengan
verbs. Oleh karenanya, modal juga sering
dinamakan kata kerja ganti)

THE USAGE OF MODALS (KEGUNAAN MODALS)
1. Can/could
a. Menyatakan kemampuan
1. I can cook very well. ( Aku bisa memasak dengan sangat baik. )
2. I could not sing this song beautifully.
( Aku tidak bisa menyanyikan lagu idengan baik.)
b. Menyatakan kemungkin
1.I Can Call You If I have finished my work.
( Aku bisa meneleponmu jika pekerjaanku sudah selesai. )
2.I Could not listen to what he said.
( Aku tidak bisa mendengarkan apa yang dia katakan. )
c. Menyatakan Izin
[Link] Can Watch TV after doing your homework.
( Kamu boleh menonton TV setelah menyelesaikan PR-mu.)
[Link] Can borrow my novel tomorrow morning.
( Kamu boleh meminjam novelku besok pagi. )
d. Menyatakan permohonan yang sopan.

2. May/might
a. Untuk menyatakan kemungkinan (tidak yakin 100%)
1. Tia does not come to the class, she may get up late.
( Tia tidak masuk sekolah. dia mungkin bangun ke- siangan. )
2. shinta might not be angry because I am her boyfriend.
(Shinta mungkin tidak marah karena aku adalah pacarnya.)
b. Untuk menyatakan izin

(Kamu boleh menemui ibumu.)

(Bolehkah aku bertanya padamu?)
3. Must / had to
[Link] must pay all of these.(Aku harus membayar semua ini.)
[Link] must not be late.(Kamu tidak boleh telat.)
c. We had to keep the secret.(Kita harus menjaga rahasia ini.)
[Link] menyatakan kepastian/ prediksi yang pasti
[Link] studying all the day. you must be so tired.
(Setelah belajar seharian, kamu pasti kecapaian.)

( Karena kamu tidak berlatih dengan serius. kamu pasti tidak
akan menang dalam lomba menari.)
4. Shall
a. Used for I and us. and will be used to express a plan
[Link] shall return the books this week end.
(Kami akan mengembalikan buku-buku ini akhir pekan ini.)
2.I shall not text you tonight.
(Aku tidak akan SMS kamu nanti malam.)
b. In a interrogative sentence, shall be used to make suggestions
[Link] is too hot here. Shall I open the window?
(Di sini panas sekali. Bagaimana jika aku membuka jendelanya?)
[Link] shall ask me if I want this food.
(Kamu sebaiknya bertanya padaku apakah aku mau makanan ini.)
5. Should
Should be used to express suggestions. In Indonesian, this
word has the best meaning. Unlike must, should not really
require someone to do the suggestion.
[Link] look so tired, you should take a rest.
(Kamu terlihat sangat capek, kamu sebaiknya beristirahat.)
[Link] Should tell me where she will go.
(Dia sebaiknya memberitahuku ke mana dia akan pergi.)

( Jika nanti malam hujan. aku tidak akan datang. )

7. Would
a. Used to express a plan in the past (plan)
1.I would visit Bali last semester but I did not have money.
(Aku akan mengunjungi Bali semester akhir tapi aku tidak
memiliki uang.)
2.I would sleep last night, but it was too noisy.
(Aku akan tidur semalam tapi berisik sekali.)
b. Used to express a polite request.

(Bisa tunjukkan KTP Anda?)
[Link] you please tell when the train leaves?
(Boleh tahu jam berapa keretanya berangkat?)
8. Ought to
Ought to is used to express suggestions. However. the
suggestion is not very strong or compelling .
[Link] ought to study tonight.
(Kamu sebaiknya belajar nanti malam.)
[Link] ought not to be here.
(Dia seharusnya tidak berada disini.)
Another form of modal is the modal perfect which is used to
denote the past. 3 formula for this form of modal is as follows:
1. (+) Subject + modal + have + V3 + (Object)
2. (-) Subject + modal + have + not +V3 + (Object)
3. (?) Modal + Subject + have + V3 + (Object)
1. Must have
Used to conclude events or events that occurred in the past. This
type of capital states that the speaker is very confident in the
conclusions he is making.
-You won the competition. You must have practiced very hard.
(Kamu memenangkan perlombaan. Kamu pasti sudah berlatih
dengan keras.)
2. May / Might have
Used to deduce the possibilities that occurred in the past. This type
of capital states that the speaker is not so sure about what he says
-Jane 0did not come to work this morning. She might have been sick.
( Jane tidak masuk kerja pagi ini. Mungkin dia sakit.
3. Could have
Used to express abilities that were not exercised in the past.
-I believe that he could have been an outstanding student.
( Aku percaya bahwa dia sebenarnya bisa menjadi siswa teladan.)
