The purpose of a narrative text : To entertain readers and listeners with

real or imaginary stories.

Generic structure of narrative text:

Orientation :It tells the audience about who is in the story, when the story is taking place
and where the action is happening.
Complication :It sets off a chain of events that influence what will happen in the story.
Resolution :The characters finally sort out the complication.

Language features of narrative text:

Using Past Tense(simple past, past continuous, or past perfect).

Task I.

Narratives are mostly written in the past tense. Change the underlined verbs in the
following story into the past tense !

The Holly Berries

 In the deep forest there live ( ) a number of tiny fairies. These little people had a
great treasure which they guarded very carefully. It was a queer thing for a treasure only a tiny
cap, but a very wonderful cap for all that.

When a fairy wores this cap, the whole fairy band becomes ( ) invisible. They
could open the flowers at dawn, dance on the sunbeams by day, and light the fireflies candles at
duck without being seen.

This cap will ( ) fit any one, and a great giant who lived in the forest wanted it for
himself. He had tried and tried to get it, but the fairies watched it so carefully that the giant had
never been able to find it.

One day when the fairies were coming home they find ( ) the great giant asleep in
the valley. They think ( ) he was a mountain and that his snores were thunder. They begin
( ) at once to hunt for a place to hide the cap till the storm was over. One little fairy
thoughts his ear was a great cave and hidden the cap there. This wokens the giant who was so
delighted to have the cap that he lets the fairies escape.

But the poor little fairies were sad at heart. What can ( ) they do without the magic
cap ? who will ( ) open the morning flowers or light the fireflies candles ? All day long
they hids under the holly trees and cried as if there hearts would break.

An old eagle who was friendly with the fairies promised them that he would get their lost
treasure. Many times the eagle flew over the mountains, but of course the giant had on the magic
cap and couldnt be seen.

But one day the giant goes to battle. He is very proud of his size and wanted to be seen,
so he rolleds a stone aside and puts the cap under it.

The eagle was watching from the blue sky. He flews down, and with his strong talons and
beak pulleds the cap from under the stone and soareds away.

The giant sees ( ) him and shots arrows at him till the eagle is wounded in many
places and great drops of blood fell on the holly trees as he passeds over them. But he kepts on
till he has placed the cap safely in the hands of the fairies.
 They healed the eagles wounds, but wherever his blood toucheds the holly trees as he
flews over them, little red berries appear. The fairies were not willing that the unselfish eagles
blood should die, so they make ( ) it live again in the beautiful blood red holly berries.
Task II

SNOW WHITE

One day she heard her aunt and uncle talking about leaving
snow white in the castle because they wanted to go to America
and they didnt have enough money to take snow white with
them.

Snow White didnt want her uncle and aunt to do this. So she
decided to run away. The next morning she run away from home
when her aunt and uncle were having breakfast, she run away
into the wood.

In the wood she felt very tired and hungry. Then she saw this
cottage. She knocked but no one answered so she went inside
and felt asleep.

Once upon a time there lived a little, named Snow White. She
lived with her aunt and uncle because her parents were died.

Meanwhile seven dwarfs were coming home from work. They

went inside. There, they found snow white woke up. She saw the
dwarfs. The dwarfs said : what is you name ? Snow White said :
My name is Snow White. One of the dwarfs said If you wish,
you may live here with us. Snow White told the whole story
about her. The Snow White and the seven dwarfs lived happily

Now in a group ! Do this text with your group, make a summarize by

your own words and give the generic structure !

1. Cinderella
Once upon a time, there lived an unhappy young girl with her stepmother
and two step sisters who didn't like her. All the nice things, kind thought and
loving touches were for her own daughters. But, for the poor unhappy girl,
there was nothing at all. For she had to work hard all day, and only when
evening came was she allowed to sit for a while by the fire, near the cinders.
That is how she got her nickname, for everybody called her Cinderella.

It was quite true. Cinderella, even dressed in rags with a dusty gray face
from the cinders, was a lovely girl. While her stepsisters, no matter how
splendid and elegant their clothes, were still clumsy, lumpy, and ugly.

One day, a ball was to be held by the royal family of the kingdom to find the
prince's spouse. Cinderella's stepsisters ordered beautiful new dress for the
ball. Cinderella wanted to go to the ball but her stepmother asked her to stay
at home.

"You? My dear girl, you're staying at home to wash the dishes, scrub the floor
and turn down the beds for your stepsisters. They will come home tired and
very sleepy." asked her stepmother.

Cinderella only nodded her head and began to work. Suddenly something
amazing happened. In the kitchen, where Cinderella was sitting all by herself,
there was a burst of light and a fairy appeared.

"Don't be afraid Cinderella, I know what you feel, my dear. Do you want to go
to ball?" asked the fairy.

"Yes, I do. But look! How can I go to the ball with this dress? Cinderella
replied.

Then the fairy turned Cinderella's dress became the most beautiful dress and
with beautiful slippers, the loveliest ever seen in the realm. The fairy also
turned a pumpkin into a parking coach and turned the mice become six
white horses.

"Now, you can go to the Court and go to the ball. But remember my dear
Cinderella, you must leave the ball at midnight and come home. For that is
when the spell ends. Your coach will turn back into a pumpkin, the horses will
become mice and you will be dressed again in rags with clogs.
At the ballroom, Cinderella amazed everybody there include the prince.
When the prince set eyes on Cinderella, he was stuck by her beauty. Walking
over to her, he bowed deeply and asked her to dance. Cinderella had a
wonderful time at the ball. But, all of a sudden, she heard the sound of a
clock, the first stroke of midnight.

Remembered what the fairy had said, Cinderella ran back to the coach and
went home. But he lost one of her slippers in ballroom. The prince who was
now madly in love with her, picked up her slipper and would search for the
girl whose foot fitted with the slipper.

In the next morning, the prince began to search everywhere in the kingdom
but no girl whose foot fitted with the slipper. Until he found Cinderella house
and asked Cinderella's stepsisters to wear the slipper. But none fitted with
the slipper. The prince began hopeless.

"Is there any girl else here" Asked the prince.

"Yes, there are. But she is very ugly and I think she is not the girl that you are
looking for." replied Cinderella's stepmother.

"Call her here!" Asked the prince.

Then Cinderella's stepmother called Cinderella to come out who was dressed
in rags and wore clogs like usual. The prince began to wear the slipper into
Cinderella foot, and it was fit.

The prince believed that Cinderella was the girl he met in the ball. Then the
prince asked Cinderella to marry him. And at the end, Cinderella and the
prince lived happily ever after in the kingdom.

2. The Ugly Duckling

One upon time, a mother duck sat on her eggs. She felt tired of sitting on them. She just
wished the eggs would break [Link] days later, she got her wish. The eggs cracked and
some cute little ducklings appeared. "Peep, peep" the little ducklings cried. "Quack, quack" their
mother greeted in return.

However the largest egg had not cracked. The mother duck sat on it for several days.
Finally, it cracked and a huge ugly duckling waddled out. The mother duck looked at him in
surprise. He was so big and very gray. He didn't look like the others at all. He was like a turkey
When the mother duck brought the children to the pond for their first swimming lesson.
 The huge grey duckling splashed and paddled about just as nicely as the other ducklings
did. "That is not a turkey chick. He is my very own son and quite handsome" the mother said
proudly However, the other animals didn't agree. They hissed and made fun of him day by day.
Even his own sisters and brothers were very unkind. "You are very ugly" they quacked.
The little poor duckling was very unhappy. "I wish I looked like them" he thought to
himself. One day, the ugly duckling run away and hid in the bushes. The sad duckling lived alone
through the cold and snow winter. Finally the spring flowers began to bloom. While he was
swimming in the pond, he saw three large white swans swimming toward him. "Oh, dear. these
beautiful birds will laugh and peck me too" he said to himself.

But the swans did not attack him. Instead, they swam around him and stroked him with their
bills. As the ugly duckling bent his neck to speak to them, he saw his reflection in the water. He
could not believe his eyes. "I am not an ugly duckling but a beautiful swam" he exclaimed.
He was very happy. From that day on, he swam and played with his new friends and was happier
than he had never been.
