Are There Plans for a New GitHub Archive Program or Arctic Code Vault 2.0?
Hello GitHub Community! 👋
I've been exploring GitHub's Archive Program and the incredible Arctic Code Vault initiative from 2020, which preserved open-source software for future generations.
I think this was one of GitHub's most inspiring initiatives, recognizing the contributions of developers while preserving software history.
As someone who joined GitHub after the February 2020 archival snapshot and has since actively contributed to open-source projects, I'm curious about the future of this initiative.
I have a few questions for the GitHub team and community:
Future archival snapshots: Are there any plans for a second Arctic Code Vault snapshot or another long-term code preservation initiative?
Five-year evaluation: GitHub previously mentioned periodically evaluating its archival technology. Has there been any update following the five-year milestone in 2025?
Contributor recognition: If a future archival snapshot takes place, could GitHub introduce a new contributor badge or achievement for developers whose repositories are included?
Community participation: Are there opportunities for developers to participate in or contribute to GitHub's ongoing preservation initiatives?
Future roadmap: Is there a public roadmap or discussion where the community can follow developments related to the GitHub Archive Program?
I believe a new archival initiative could be an exciting opportunity to recognize the next generation of open-source contributors while continuing GitHub's mission of preserving software history.
I'd love to hear thoughts from GitHub staff and fellow developers!
Thanks for building and supporting the open-source community! 🚀
