It would be great if it were possible to set the selection background color, but leave the foreground colors alone. In terms of the configuration setting, I suggest a custom keyword for selection_foreground that indicates it won't be used, something like none or off. I'm not sure how hard this would be to implement, though conceptually it seems easier to just change the background color instead of both background and foreground.
