Is there a way to list repos in an organization I don't have read access to? #8227

There isn't a GitHub documents private repository access and organization repository roles. As you noted, setting base permissions to read would grant access to the repositories' contents, so it does not provide the separate names-only permission you want. For the duplicate-project discovery use case, an organization owner could maintain an approved project catalog with the names/descriptions that may be shared with members. The process that refreshes that catalog would need authorized access to the source repositories, and the owner would need to approve which metadata it exposes. The catalog can omit sensitive repositories while leaving their existing access controls intact. That is separate from an ordinary member enumerating hidden repositories through I checked the current CLI help/manual and GitHub's documented access model, and ran a public-repository listing smoke check. I have not tested this with an owner account in your organization or changed any permissions. AI assistance: written with OpenAI Codex. |

When I run the following command, it displays a list of all repos in an organization named
ORGANIZATION_NAME, including private repos that I have at least read access to.Is there a way to show private repos in the organization that I don't have read access to?
Functionality and Security Considerations
I know I can't view repo contents; I'm only looking for a list of names that are in-use. This shouldn't be a security issue since I can find this information by simply trying to create a new repo with the same name (if it's rejected, a private repo with that name exists).
Potential Use Case
I'm interested in setting up a way to alert users of similar repos that may exist already. I'm aware that setting base permissions for the organization to "read" would solve this issue, but there are some repos in the organization that need to be restricted to only certain subsets of members, so this isn't an option in my case.
